The demise of Save-A-Lot stirs up speculation

The closure of the Save-A-Lot at the end of March prompted a decent-sized online debate about what entity should take over the former historic Pioneer Market location. It’s not clear whether or not the Save-A-Lot will actually return, but a letter posted on the front door doesn’t paint a pretty picture for the chain:

“It has come to the Landlord’s attention that Subtenant has ceased operating from the Premises. In order to protect the integrity of the Premisess and Landlord’s interest therein, Landlord has changed the locks and entered the Premises to inspect name.”

So what’s next?

Well, pretty much every time this location is open for a new tenant, someone mentions wanting a Trader Joe’s. Or perhaps a Fresh and Easy? The Sunset Blvd. storefront is a great location for any retailer or grocer, but so far no announcements have been made.

There’s even a Facebook page called “Bring Trader Joe’s to Echo Park” (with 200+ fans) for neighbors pushing for a Trader Joe’s to take over the location, even amongst speculation that the chain would never open in such a “low income” neighborhood.

It’s a nice thought – the nearest locations are Eagle Rock and Silver Lake, and it would be great to avoid the drive (ever try to park in the Silver Lake one at 5:00 on a Friday? Or any day of the week for that matter). But the downside to bringing a Trader Joe’s to Echo Park in that location is exactly the same issue – parking, traffic due to backed up parking, lack of employee parking, and all-around traffic/parking problems. Frankly, it would be a kind of a nightmare. But would you give up parking convenience that for Trader Joe’s convenience?

A comment on an Eastsider LA article (which, by the way, has nearly 60 comments!) mentioned they’d like to see a second Figueroa Produce location – truly my number one choice and probably a better fit for this neighborhood than another grocery chain. I mean, the fresh salsa and guacamole are really the best!

No offense to the Trader Joe’s fans, but here’s my official call to action: Bring on Figueroa Produce!

I’m neither a devoted Trader Joe’s fan nor a hater and I love Fresh & Easy for their convenience foods… but I’d like to see something with more personality open here as well. The kind of place I could consider “my local grocery”.

And for the record… I love my “low income” neighborhood… just wish I paid “low income” rent.

  2. Joey says:

Los Feliz/Silverlake needs a Whole Foods, dammit. Echo Park is too ghetto but that would be nice. Gentrify the place.

  3. fat Betsy says:

I dont care about figerou producce. Please.. we want TRADER JOES in our neiborhood. Thus way we have Quality food that costs 2dollars, and more jobs for people WHO SPEAK ENGLISH!!!!

  4. MAL says:

I was in the Trader Joe’s camp, but then I read the gossip that TJ’s would never move into such a “low income” neighborhood. I also remembered how a lot of their food is actually kind of bad quality (remember how they had to recall all their diseased factory farm eggs?). I’m in total agreement about a Figueroa Produce — SO much better than a TJ’s!!!

  5. Cyndi says:

your article is annoying. of course you’re going to go against what everyone in the neighborhood wants. there’s plenty of room for TJ’s in the hood. plenty. thanks for your support douche bag.

  6. Chardym says:

Trader Joe’s! And I agree with Christy above, this “low income” neighborhood certainly is not “low rent.” I think if TJ’s did a little market research (which I am sure they probably already are) they would see that EP is exactly the right demographic for their store. The parking issues just might be appealing to them, as most of their stores are notorious for frustrating parking lots and traffic. I’m not so excited about FIgueroa Produce, there are more than several places along this strip of Sunset Blvd. from which to purchase excellent guacamole and salsa – take out taquerias and the like. Let’s diversify and get a store that sells affordable, healthy items (not to mention cheap wine).

I loved the fact save-A-Lot had inexpensive meats! I will miss it. While it would be pretty awesome to have a Trader Joes in there I would prefer a small mom and pop type place with a decent meat counter. I would go to the place across the street but it’s just too gnarly for me. the Korean place down sunset a bit works as well I guess. but… again: slightly gnarly.
