Great deal! But don’t miss the small type: “Use any October receipt from our Echo Park store, totalling $40 or more, for entry.”

The Echo Park Farmers’ Market is celebrating its 3rd Anniversary this Friday, October 16 from 3:00-7:00 pm. The event will feature a Good Cooking/Buena Cocina demonstration with free samples, free carrot cake from La Boulangerie, and of course farm fresh, locally grown produce and prepared foods and crafts from local vendors.

The Farmers’ Market takes place every Friday from 3:00-7:00 pm at Parking lot #663, 1142 Logan St., half a block south of Sunset Blvd.

Wednesday nights at The Park restaurant on Sunset is a delicious $5 burger night  – whether your tastes be a 6 oz. sirloin or a homemade veggie burger. One thing to know before you go – the burger does come plain, so for $1 each you can add extras like cheese, onions, or aoli.

The last time we went to The Park we were disappointed to learn that its BYOB policy had been thrown out the window a while back. The meal was definitely still delightful, even as my cold bottle of Pinot Grigio sat beside my purse. However, now you can bring your own spirits on Tuesdays and Fridays with a reservation.

Allston Yacht Club owners Bill DiDonna and Charles Kelly
have started writing a restaurant and food-related blog on the Huffington Post. The first installment, “Adventures in the Restaurant Business,” was posted on September 29, 2009, and can be found here. Good luck and we’ll keep following the blog!

If your Saturday dinner plans involve eating out at the Allston Yacht Club on Echo Park Blvd., 20% of your check can be donated to 826LA if you mention it to your server.

826LA is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. They offer tutoring for the kids Monday through Thursday from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm.

Allston Yacht Club is located here.
You can learn more about 826LA on their website.

It’s true… we occasionally cross the Echo Park borders to check out some cheap eats. This is one such occasion. Starting this weekend, Flore Cafe in Silverlake is hosting a couple of “All-you-can-eat” special days. Going on for three days, from Saturday, September 26 through Monday, September 28, the cafe will be serving all-you-can-eat vegan tostadas, brunch, and “turkey” dinner for $10 per person for each event.

Flore Cafe is located at 3206 W Sunset Blvd. (not the Sunset Junction location) and you can find more information about the menu here.

“Bring your stuff to Echo Curio on Sat, August 22nd from 12-4 PM and trade it in for something new. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Clothes, furniture, tools, gadgets, appliances, shoes, books, telescopes, toys, collectables, helicopter rides, pets, home grown fruits and vegetables…bring it all. A recession can be fun! Lets celebrate at the swap.”

Public Fruit Jam 2009! Our Fourth Annual Jam with the Fallen Fruit Collective.
Sunday, August 2
10am to 1pm

Yesiree, it’s that ripe time of year again! Making jam and getting into sticky situations with Fallen Fruit collective is one of our favorite summertime traditions! Bring along your home-grown or public fruit and any clean, empty glass jars you have. At the end everyone will leave with a jar of communal jam. If enough people bring surplus, even the empty handed will leave with jam. Vats of fun for all!

The kinds of jam we make will improvise on the fruit that people provide. The fruit can be fresh or frozen. Fallen Fruit will bring public fruit. We are looking for radical and experimental jams as well, like basil guava or lemon pepper jelly. We’ll discuss the basics of jam and jelly making, pectin and bindings, as well as the communal power of shared fruit and the liberation of public fruit.
