Every ten years, the city takes a look at the borders of each district to ensure those commmunities are getting fair representation in the city. That’s the idea anyways – and that’s why we’re getting involved. There have been rumors about combining Echo Park into one council district instead of two – a very small but not forgotten portion of Echo Park is represented by CD1, which is Reyes’ district. The redistricting process could affect Echo Park, and it’s up to the members of the community to make sure any changes in the borders are in our best interest.

The commission in charge of redistricting is holding a series of public hearings where we can share our thoughts and opinions on the redistricting. As Echo Park residents, we should be attending both CD13 and CD1 meetings, which are on Saturday and Monday, respectively:

Council District 1
Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 11:00 am
St. Peter’s Italian Catholic Church
1039 N. Broadway 90012

Council District 13
Monday, January 9, 2012 at 6:30 pm
Los Angeles City College Theatre
855 N. Vermont Avenue 90029

h/t Cindy Marie Jenkins for keeping us informed!

We’ll see you tomorrow!

Our CD13 rep Eric Garcetti is quite busy these days! (Perhaps gearing up for a mayoral campaign…?) Tomorrow (Saturday, April 2, 2011) he and his team will be hosting a “visioning summit” for Echo Park and Historic Filipinotown.

Called the “Los Angeles Neighborhood Dreams (LAND),” the community forum is a chance for Echo Park residents to voice their opinions about the future of Echo Park.

What do you see in the future of Echo Park? Perhaps more transparency when big developers want to build in Echo Park? More community input? A serious look at the Community Plan and removal of rules that give developers rights to build high-density projects that don’t fit in with the community?

Okay, maybe those are my recommendations. Yours might be a little different – so share them at tomorrow’s forum!

When: Saturday, April 2nd from 9:00 am to 12:0 pm

Where: Angelus Temple, located at 1100 Glendale Blvd.

See you there!

Tonight is the Town Hall meeting where residents can meet and speak to the new LA Planning Director, Michael LoGrande. Echo Park has some stake in this meeting – at least two developments in Echo Park are being criticized by neighbors for developing buildings that breach our community planning guidelines: Avalon Street and the Sunset Flats development on Sunset and Rosemont. This is a great opportunity to find out what the city has in store for our community.

If you’re not planning on attending tonight’s meting, you can still submit questions online by clicking here.
