Sticking around Echo Park this weekend instead of roughing it up at Coachella?

There’s a brand new salon in town that wants to celebrate its opening with you – Folklore Salon just opened up its doors on Mohawk Street near Sunset Boulevard. They are kicking it off with a block party on Saturday, April 14 from -8:00 pm, with all the neighbors!

Participating businesses will be offering up discounts in support of the event, including: Spit Fire Girl, Gentlemen’s Breakfast, Myrtle (drinks & snacks, 20% off store), 8 Limbs, The Hedgehog (formerly the Coffee Pot), Kelly Green, DeKore, Iam8bit, Lux DeVille. The SweetBeats Truck will be serving up beats and ice cream on the corner, so you can’t miss it!

Congrats on the opening!

We are very excited for the grand opening for The Classroom LA – a recreational class space created by Echo Park resident and uber entrepreneur Justin Warwick. Also a friend of ours, Justin is the man behind Warwick Vintage store, which used to be along Sunset Blvd., and now The Warehouse – a large vintage and DIY space filled with tons of treasures. If you haven’t checked it out – now’s your chance!

The Classroom offers inexpensive (only $25 each) classes from jewelry making and sewing to terrarium building. They also host private events should you want to take a private class as a group.

Gift certificates for both the store and the classroom are available for $35 – they include a unique and really cute terrarium. We got a peak at these last Saturday at the Citizens Committee to Save Elysian Park annual banquet, where two of them were donated and raffled off – they were pretty awesome!

The Classroom LA grand opening party takes place tomorrow, June 11 from 4-11:00 pm at the Warehouse, located at 1197 W. Sunset Blvd.

Please contact us (213) 482-4089 or info@theclassroomla.com for more information.

See you there!

The owners and employees at Chinatown Express in Echo Park had something to celebrate on the weekend of December 4, 2010 – the local Chinese food restaurant finally reopened its doors after a fire broke out in the mini mall over a year ago in September of 2009. It looks like they had a blast at the opening!

Just a few months ago, owner Justin Warwick closed down his vintage store, Warwick, on Sunset Blvd. near the Short Stop. He took on a huge project remodeling and fixing up a warehouse space farther down the road, and is now ready to show off his hard work with a grand opening party on Friday, October 15.

Free Booze, piñatas on the patio, local DJs, DIY Class demos, sales! (15% off if you say the magic word, Seahorse), unique restyled vintage, dart painting, and much more…

There will be a special live painting with Germany’s Ma’Claim team (AKUT, TASSO, CASE) and some of LA’s finest street artists. There will be a taco truck, a special event sale, and free giveaways.

Hours are Thursday through Monday 12-00 noon pm – 7:00 pm

Mooi in Echo Park

Looks like Mooi, a raw vegan restaurant we read about earlier this year, is no longer set to open up on Glendale Blvd. under the bridge – its new location has sprung up at the corner of Sunset and Logan. Taking over a former medical clinic, the new corner location is part of Jensen’s Recreation Center.

According to its website, the restaurant concept includes organic food, and, whenever possible, locally grown. They don’t use any animal protein or dairy products, soy, wheat, or gluten. They never deyhdrate anything over 118 degrees, “therefore preserving all of their natural nutriets and enzymes which allows us to bring you not only the best tasting but the healthiest and most nutritional food that we can.”

While we await their opening, you can try out their vegan desserts at Elf Cafe (2135 Sunset Boulevard).
