July 4th, 2011 fireworks

Thanksgiving dinner with the family last night was accompanied by an unusual noise this time of year – loud popping sounds coming from somewhere nearby in Echo Park. I immediately concluded the sounds were fireworks, not having the heart to tell my family it maybe, perhaps, could have been gunshots (I’m apparently not so good and telling the difference right away).

We figured it wasn’t the latter, but resident Jeanne did some digging of her own, and apparently the dinner-time fireworks we heard weren’t the only ones. Jeanne emailed us the official word this morning:

Bizarrely, per northeast division desk sargent: some adolescent thought it would be entertaining to light fireworks in the wee hours of the morning in the 1300 block of sunset.

So for once, the large explosive noises were not gunfire-that-sounded-like-fireworks, but actually fireworks.

A relief i guess for it not to be shooting…

Here, here!

This gem of information popped up on LAist today about how the holiday parking enforcement is a little relaxed on holidays like Independence Day (today is an observed holiday).

Here are the details from the Department of Transportation:

Other holidays include New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King’s Birthday, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Click on the screen capture above for the full PDF; call 311 if you have any questions.

From Green LA Girl:

Recycle your old holiday LED lights by packing them up along with your name and email address to:

HolidayLEDs.com

Attn: Recycling Program

118 Rosehill Dr., Suite 1

Jackson, MI 49202

According to the HolidatLEDs.com website, the recycling process goes as follows:

When we receive your lights for recycling we will remove them from the package and recycle the box. The lights will be processed and any material that cannot be recycled (i.e. loose bulbs)is discarded. Once we have collected a substantial number of sets we take them to a 3rd party recycling facility located in Jackson, MI. The recycling company puts the lights through a commercial shredder, which chops the lights up into little pieces. The pieces are then further processed and sorted into the various components that make up the lights (pvc, glass, copper.) The materials are separated and transported to a region center for further processing.
