Portlandia coming to Echo Park

Did you know…. In Portland you can go to a record store and sell your CDs?

That’s right – we’re talkin’ Portlandia. They’re coming to Echo Park on January 17, 2012 and well, let’s face it – you could re-name the show EchoParklandia and it’d basically be the same show. I have to say, I’m a fan!

The event at The Echo is one of six city tours (dubbed Portlandia: The Tour), and features co-creators Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein. They’ll be performing live music, talking about the show, and playing clips from the show’s second season, which premieres on January 6, 2012. Here’s a little sneak peak of what you can expect (from the show’s website):




Tickets are $20.00 advance BUT here’s the deal – it looks like it’s already sold out. You might be able to get the $26.00 tix on the day of the show, if there are any available.

The Echo celebrates 10 years through December

A hearty happy anniversary goes out to The Echo – the long-time music venue that has hosted pretty much every type of band is celebrating 10 years in the ‘hood. They’ve been posting pictures and videos of their fave shows from the past 10 years each and every day of December on their Tumblr site. In the meantime, there are some great shows for the month, which we’ll also continue to post in our weekly Echo Park’s Week in Music updates.

Tonight is Allen Stone and ZZ Ward, and Saturday is the return of the “Irregular Wine Tasting,” during which you’ll get to enjoy six West Coast wines from Darcie Kent Vineyards and Duck Pond Cellars while watching 1988 flick Miracle Mile (somehow the tasting is timed with the movie). Tickets are $20, click here to purchase and for more info.

Flashback Fridays: The Echo building and Sunset Blvd.

This week’s flashback is another fun photo find, this time along Sunset Boulevard. We’re not certain when these photographs were taken, but my amateur classic car knowledge places it around the 1920s or early ’30s (please let me know if this is inaccurate and we’ll happily revise!).

The photo above shows the building where The Echo is currently located. The original architecture on the left-hand side of the image, where the arches are, display what is now Two Boots and Origami Vinyl, the central entrance is now The Echo.

Makes you kind of wish the arches on the right-hand side were maintained, right now there’s the old Nayarit Restaurant sign.

The photo on the right is around, I believe, the same time. This is taken from Sunset Blvd. on the Bridge that crosses over Glendale Blvd.. Notice the wooden sidewalk along the left side of the street, and you can see the Jensen’s Recreation sign in the distance. And of course, the trolley lines zigzag across the sky.

Aquarium Drunkard, in conjunction with the Echo, is holding its second all ages festival here in L.A. in Echo Park. Dubbed WAVED OUT, after Justin Gage’s favorite Robert Pollard solo album, this is the second recurring event featuring emerging national, local and international artists.
