What are you doing tonight?

At Echo Curio:

Tues, Feb 16th – CHEESE ON BREAD + ROYALCHORD + BIG WHUP

CHEESE ON BREAD has been described as Joan Baez and Raffi singing about
sucking cock.  Others claim that listening to it will lead to a deadly joygasm.  We just
know that it is gonna be fun, fun fun.  Joining them is Australia’s royalchord, all
lower case on purpose, to understate the amazing lo-fi majesty you are going to
experience.  I can’t say enough how many amazing travelling bands come through
here and how much you should try to see them as often as possible, cuz this
makes our big world that much smaller and friendlier.  And not to ignore our
amazing local bands too, we’ve just added the always challenging and yet deeply
satisfying three ring circus of rock, BIG WHUP.  Easily the smartest night of rock we’
ve ever had!!!

Mon, Feb 15th – NEW MUSIC MONDAY with PETER WEISS (featuring DSS and
NICK DEWITT) + JOSH KLINGHOFFER + BLACK CHURCH

Ok, tonight is yet another of the increasingly insanely amazing nights curated by
Mr. DAVID SCOTT STONE , and while he is not presenting one of his amazing solo
performance, he is performing with the infamous PETER WEISS (of Thelonious
Monster fame) who is presenting musical poetry along with an all star band.
Recent Red Hot Chili Pepper addition, JOSH KLINGHOFFER is gonna present an
undetermined solo set as well, and we’re pretty excited for that too.  And local
looper BLACK CHURCH holds mass for us as well… remember these nights start
early and end early, so be here at 9p to see all the action.

From the organizers:

Galerie Lakaye and Living Art Los Angeles, a local non-profit organization, are organizing Haitian Relief LA, a fundraiser to take place on Sunday, February 14 (Valentine’s Day) at Echo Park Lake–a benefit concert/day of music and art for Haiti disaster relief. The event will include musical, dance and spoken word performances by local Los Angeles artists, as well as Haitian artists, including lots of activities for kids and families. The gallery will also present a wonderful exhibit of Haitian art.

UNICEF, Partners in Health and Hollywood Unites for Haiti will be on hand to collect donations.

In brief, here’s how we envision the participation of professional visual artists: artists come out to the park to paint on canvasses, which will be sent to Haitians living in tent cities as gifts of art to hang on their tents/temporary homes for months to come. Sponsor art organizations will donate canvas and supplies, or even better yet, bring your own! Everything will be set up; Temporary walls/easels will be set up. All you have to do is show up and paint!

The canvasses will be distributed in Haiti by Hollywood Unites for Haiti (HUFH), a non-profit organization on the ground in Haiti. Its mission is to promote cultural activities and sports to underprivileged youth in Haiti. It was started by Haitian actor, Jimmy Jean-Louis.

Most people don’t know that, as far as paintings go, Haiti is the biggest source for black art in the world. Haitians understand the value of art.

We can’t all donate money, but a gift of art can certainly lift the spirit! In that respect, please note that we are asking for positive, inspiring imagery to be sent to the people of Haiti.

“Machine: Subject/Object/Project”, an installation by Nate Page, will be open all month from Feb 6th – March 5th, 2010. It’s rare that there’s a show up at Machine you can just stop by and see, and even rarer that it involves a giant chair made out of folding tables, so be sure to come visit. Open every weekend in February from 12-4pm, or even more reliably, by appointment.

At Machine Project on Sunday Feb 14th at 12pm is the second show in our February music residency by Nowcloud. Happening in and around Nate Page’s installation, these performances feature Max Markowitz and Corey Fogel as well as snacks. Free.

Artillery & Ammo present: HOME The works of Sophia Allison and Cheryl Groff.

OPENING RECEPTION February 13th at 7 o’clock till … ?

HOME is a new show curated by Deryke cardenaz.

About the show …
HOME is the works of two southern California artists, Sophia Allison and Cheryl Groff. HOME is a word that means different things to all of us. For some its the place they were born, and for others it is the place they are at, but for all of us it means a place of belonging as well as a place we carry with us. Each artist’s work is a unique expression / exploration of this concept. The works invite the viewer in to each of their respective worlds.

Artillery & Ammo is proud to have this show on its walls. The show runs from FEB 13 to MAR 7th.

Some of us recently received these brochures in the mail with just a little information about the 800 plus residential condos that might be built on the hospital’s property. For those Echo Park residents attempting to take part in the brochure’s survey online, all they get is this:

…before even getting started! So far, it looks like the only way to share your thoughts (or many concerns) is to fill out the survey and mail it in, or call Chris Fuentes at 213-202-6840. You can also join the conversation of many concerned Echo Park residents on the Echo Elysian Neighborhood Council Forum.

You can also download the full brochure by clicking here, and you can download/print the actual survey here.

The Eastsider LA has also done some great coverage on the Barlow development, you can read more by clicking here.

It’s a bit of a hike up Echo Park Avenue to get to Echo Country Outpost, but it’s certainly worth the trip. The interior design and the wares they’ve got for sale set it apart from the other boutiques and thrift stores in the neighborhood. While browsing their selection of moccasins, zarapes and giant pinecones, I felt less like I was in a second-hand shop in Los Angeles and more like I was visiting a roadside gift shop off of the 395.

The store has been open since November 2009 and is owned by Erica, Brendan and Chris. According to Erica, the store is a kind of extension of their home. Many of the goods for sale are antiques and handmade objects that they collected while traveling through the desert: antique wool point blankets, all-natural fir and cedar incense, vintage literature and a really fun assortment of goods that evoke the spirit of the American southwest.

As well as a store, they also strive to be “a new neighborhood gathering place.” They’ve already started hosting events including poker every Friday night (open to everyone)! So strap on yer chaps, git on yer mount and ride on over to 1930 Echo Park Ave. They’re open from noon to 8, Tuesday through Sunday.
