Video: Winehouse in Echo Park
LAist brings this 2007 video to our attention after the news of Amy Winehouse’s death. According to the article, the video titled “Tears Dry on Their Own” was shot in Hollywood as well as partly in Echo Park, so we’re posting it as well because, of course, Echo Park rules. Okay, 5 seconds of an Echo Park Motel….I appreciate your digging this up. But my takeaway from this video is simply a lingering feeling of contempt. Anyone can sing along to a sampled loop made famous by Marvin Gaye and Tami Terrell and call it a ‘song’. At the end of the day, was she truly an artist? What set her apart from pop throw aways like Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson? It seems to me that dipping ones toes in fringe Rockabilly fashion/culture, getting wasted with Pete Doherty and sporting a Fred Perry or Ben Sherman around London=instant qualification as a “visionary”. She deserves credit for a handful of catchy retro R&B tunes from 2007, but to suggest (as the media is frothing at the mouth to bookend her life with) that she has left a legacy even remotely similar to those blazed by Brian Jones or Hendrix is pathetic and insulting.
Tsk, Tsk….such bitterness. Didn’t your mother teach you” when you have nothing NICE to say…SAY NOTHING”!
A talented young woman who was filled with sadness and despair has passed away….

Funny that you think she wasn’t talented because she sampled a song… that only proves to me that you’re not actually listening. What set her apart from those other ‘singers’, for one, was that she wrote her own songs (most of which did not include samples, and she wrote them all, music, lyrics, and arrangements). What else? She can actually sing. She was a trained jazz singer, and you can ask anyone who knows anything about singing or music and they’ll tell you she’s talented beyond most people in popular music today, not to mention she’s up there in talent with the greats. Sorry if you can’t get over the 60’s, but the rest of us have moved on and can accept new talent without bitterness… I feel pity for you that you can’t.
