Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, djs spinning records and on and on.”

We just received word of a new organization called the Green Beacon Foundation. Located in Elysian Heights, it focuses on environmental educational and teaches people how to lead more sustainable lives through workshops and lectures.

They’ve got a workshop coming up this Saturday, April 17 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm entitled “PLASTIC: The Good, The Bad & The Deadly.”

Our homes are filled with plastics, and most of us don’t really know what they’re made of – or whether they’re safe.  Nancy Astid Lindo of Astrid Design Studio is back again to enlighten us on just how we can effectively reduce or eliminate the use of plastic inside the home and in our bodies. More than a workshop, this is a call to action. We must take a stand for our health and that of the planet and begin to eliminate the use of plastics as much as possible.

Cost is $10, you can pay online by clicking here. To RSVP and for address and directions, email Julie at contactgbf@gmail.com

Friday, April 9 @ 8:00 pm – INSIDE TWIN PEAKS WITH ROBERT ENGELS
TWIN PEAKS NIGHT! Writer-Producer Robert Engels will show his favorite episode of the TV series plus numerous extras and surprises, and will be there in person for an insider’s take on what when on during the making of this cult and critical favorite. $10 admission. All proceeds benefit EPFC’s free youth workshops.

Saturday, April 10 @ 8:00 pm – FOLK NIGHT: LES BLANK MEETS 1921A
Join us for a very special evening as we rummage through the archive to bring you a double header of experimental folk music and films. Come for short films by Les Blank (Gap Toothed Women, Garlic Is As Good As Ten Mothers) and stay for the music, with a live set from The 1921A, featuring a screaming banjo and songs inspired by the old that sound nothing but the new.

Thursday, April 15 @ 8:00 pm – SOUTHERN EXPOSURE #2
A recent survey of short films from the American South curated by local filmmaker and EPFC teacher Will O’Loughlen. Topics include a filmmaker’s relationship with his mother through a recorded conversation between 8th grade students and astronauts aboard the international space station, a group of students who return to New Orleans after Katrina to graduate from high school with their friends, a student’s Oscars nominated story of a young couple who confront a burglar in their neighborhood in the midst of a hurricane, and much more!

Professional organizer, blogger, and Echo Park resident Beth Zeigler is leading two workshops on Friday to help you get organized. Beth (whose company is called Bneato) will organize your home or office or teach you how to do so. If you don’t have the time or funds for one on one counseling than you are in luck. She leads classes to get you started on your journey to a clear desk.

I See Hawks in LA

“Southern California is a land of strange, dangerous and beautiful contrasts. A mountain lion prowls outside the tract home bedroom of a teenage girl while she talks, oblivious to its existence, on her cell phone. A rattlesnake slithers across an empty shopping mall parking lot on a hot summer night while the employees count up the days profit and turn out the lights. While paparazzi chase the latest talent free celebrity, a talented, literate bunch of soulful musicians create honest and wise roots music for the ages. I See Hawks are indeed one of California’s unique treasures.” – Dave Alvin

Wheelhouse

Wheelhouse is Brian Whelan calling in every favor in his back pocket. A solo debut ten years in the making, Whelan has combined LA’s rich Americana history with the younger, snottier indie-rock of the city’s present day. As a member of the Broken West, Whelan explored the new(ish) frontiers of the independent music world, and while backing up Mike Stinson, Randy Weeks and Tony Gilkyson learned the ancient art of honky-tonking. Whelan loves the rock ‘n’ roll of Buddy Holly the way most of us love our mothers – don’t miss the chance to catch him live and in person. Band features Broken West leader Ross Flournoy and former Everest members Rob Douglas and Derrek Brown. The Grand Ole Echo

Mars Arizona

No, you can’t get there from here. You can stare at the map all you want and you won’t find it. Mars Arizona has a population of two, and is best apprehended with the ears.High Desert is the fourth album from Mars Arizona, the name Nicole Storto and Paul Knowles use when they’re fashioning their brew of country, rock, and roll. As a matter of practice they’re joined by some talented helpers including drummers Billy Block (Frank Black) and Ken Coomer (Uncle Tupelo and Wilco), fiddler Ollie O’Shea (Hank Williams III) and lap steel guitarist Paul Laques (I See Hawks In L.A.), and a host of others. – The Grand Ole Echo

“FRIENDS (AND FRIENDS OF FRIENDS) of 2023!

As you may know, our friend, artist/2023 mastermind Tommy Mose Abbott broke his leg over a month ago. He has been unable to work since then. To make matters worse, Tommy has been evicted from 2023! As you can imagine, it’s hard enough to find work and a place to live these days.

And MORE TBA!!!

We’ll be asking for $5 – $15 at the door. Every dollar will go directly to Tommy!

If enough funds are raised we can look forward to another comparable space opening up soon as this is such an unfortunate time to lose the space.

Come celebrate and give Tommy a big ol’ pinch on the cheek, Granny style!! And let’s all together mourn proper the passing of 2023!”

Thursday (April 1)  is the last day for vendors to apply for a space at the Silver Lake Jubilee – a music and arts festival coming up on May 22-23.

The Silver Lake Jubilee will include musical and community performances, comedy, local food, interactive booths, and art and literary installations. The event will have a very strong focus on the environment, including the implementation of “Zero Waste initiatives with the goal of 90% land fill diversion and sourcing power from alternative energy resources.” There will be several interactive “villages,” including a Children’s Village, Literary Village, Arts Village and Eco Village along Myra Avenue (from Santa Monica Boulevard to Fountain Avenue).

Spaceland, Origami Vinyl, buzzbands.la and El Echo Parqeuño are curating music for the event.

They are looking for businesses and non-profits to purchase booths for the event (non-profits are encouraged to share booth space if affordability is an issue). You an click here to download the vendor application PDF.

About the event:
The Silver Lake Jubilee bridges cultural diversity through social interactions with the goal of stimulating community involvement. The Los Angeles Arts and Athletics Alliance (LAAAA), a non‐profit organization promoting and educating arts and athletics through events and programs in Silver Lake and surrounding neighborhoods is the driving force behind the festival. Leading up to the Silver Lake Jubilee is a series of monthly showcases, known as Serenade Sunset, occurring the last Wednesday of each month. The showcases raise awareness for the Silver Lake Jubilee. Serenade Sunset is held at El Cid(21+) and the outdoor garden at Mi Alma Design (All Ages).

The Silver Lake Jubilee is an all ages event. The success of the event is contingent upon the support of the local residential and business community, Council District 13‐President Eric Garcetti, Council District 4 ‐ Councilmember Tom LaBonge, Silver Lake Neighborhood Council, corporate sponsors, private donors, non‐profits organizations in the area and the City of Los Angeles.

OUR DUMB BOOK EVENT

with Division Day, Tom Lennon, Ben Garant, and Megan Ganz

At the Echoplex, Thursday, April 1
7:30 pm
$10, 18+

Posted on The Echo website:

Beautiful people of Los Angeles, reschedule your Botox appointments. Put that anal bleaching on hold. Stop doing whatever other lazy L.A. stereotype we can’t think of, and point your Prius in the direction of Echo Park: We’re coming to see you.

That’s right, the multimedia caravan around our Inventory book is coming to the Echoplex on April 1, and this time we’re bringing with us our siblings, The Onion—who have their own awesome book to promote. (Buy them together for a low low price here!) For one night only, staff members from both publications will be on hand to read, show videos, talk, and generally goof around for your enjoyment.

And we won’t be alone. Joining us will be Tom Lennon and Ben Garant (of Reno 911!, The State, and a bunch of other stuff), reading their guest lists from Inventory, Important Things With Demetri Martin writer—and former Onion scribe—Megan Ganz, L.A. band Division Day, and others TBA. It’s going to be crazy and fun, and you should most certainly come.

The Echoplex, located at 1154 Glendale Blvd.

Some of you might remember the fire at Tigeorges’ Chicken the other month. Well the popular Haitian restaurant wasn’t the only business to suffer damage. Smoke from the fire and water from the firemen made their mark on the underground art and music space, L’Keg. A benefit is being held this Saturday to raise money so that L’Keg can reopen their doors as soon as possible.

Here is the deal: you have to RSVP on Facebook to find out the secret location. You can do that at the event page here. Those of you without Facebook will need a friend to help you out. However, this event is geared towards a scene familiar with Facebook so I bet if you are interested in this you already have an account!

Best Coast (Art Fag Recording, 2009) is a recent discovery for me and I love them. Luckily for me, and you as well, they will be playing Waved Out at the Echo and Echoplex this Saturday, March 27th.

Get this 7″ EP while it’s still in print. If you love thick distortion and heavy reverb, mixed with 1960’s pop sensibility song writing and a stoned-in-California vibe, this is for you.
