Echo Park, Edendale, and Silver Lake Libraries:

Free puppet shows, magic shows, music, storytimes, crafts, and lots of books to read!
When you join the free 2011 Summer Reading Club, you will receive a game board. See if you can “read around the world,” 30 minutes at a time! After you read 2 hours, you get a sticker and a chance to win a prize. After you read 8 hours, you get a free book to take home. If you read 15 hours, you might win a Grand Prize!

New this year – a special game board just for kids ages 0 to 4 and their parents! Young kids and parents do fun activities together, such as reading books, going to library storytime, and making animal noises. After you finish the game board, the child gets a free book to take home and is eligible for a Grand Prize.

In the Summer Reading Club, you get to read whatever you want – for fun! And the more you read, the better you get at it.

This coming Monday, July 19, will be the first Monday all 72 Los Angeles libraries will be closed as the result of city budget cuts and the reduction of library staff. Library branches, such as the Edendale and Echo Park Libraries, are now closed on Sundays, Mondays, and Holidays.

Branch hours and web-based resources are available 24 hours a day at www.lapl.org

    Flickr photo via Nickels_Photography

There will be a demonstration and program to protest the closing of the libraries on Monday and those reduced hours listed above. “Unslam the Doors: Keep the Library Open” takes place on Monday, July 19 at 9:30 am at the entrance of the Central Library (630 W. 5th Street).

We have some information from the event organizers:

Please come out and show your support for Los Angeles Public Library. On July 1, the Mayor and City Council laid off 160 library workers, forcing service hours to be cut an additional day. This Monday, July 19th marks the first day the library will be closed on Mondays in LA history. If we don’t take a stand now, there are likely more layoffs and more cuts to come.

For more information, go to savethelibrary.org

Shop for your summer reading books! The Echo Park Library Community Group is having a book sale on Saturday, April 10 from 12 noon – 4:00 pm.
