Ongoing/Weekly Specials

At last week’s Echo Park Improvement Association meeting, officer Robert Hill provided us with an update from the Northeast Division Police Department. Here are some notes from that update:

  • The Northeast Division made three arrests made last week, including a 19-year-old on Valentine Street and two juveniles breaking into a house. Since those arrests, Officer Hill says there haven’t been any similar break-ins since (as of the meeting date, which was on June 3).
  • Since residents cleaned up the Lucretia stairway on May 15, Officer Hill says there are no more “kids” hanging around anymore.
  • Kids and teenagers have been recently experimenting with these plants called “trumpet flowers,” and two or three students (Hill said three, The Eastsider LA is reporting two) were recently found skipping school and appeared to be under the influence of this poisonous plant (by ingesting the plant, some people believe it has hallucinogenic properties, but is actually quite deadly). The Eastsider LA has the full story here.
  • Car break-ins are still occurring around Dodger stadium, especially on Laveta Terrace.
  • There was a narcotic arrest off of Scott Avenue near Portia, in which first responders were responding to a domestic dispute and drugs were found in the residence.

Here are some of the crimes that have occurred since June 1:

June 1: Two violent robberies, one theft from vehicle

June 2: two thefts from vehicle, three personal/other thefts

June 3: one theft from vehicle, one violent robbery, two aggravated assaults

June 4: four thefts from vehicle, one personal/other theft

June 5: One theft from vehicle, two aggravated assault

June 6: One aggravated, one personal/other theft, two thefts from vehicle, one violent robbery

June 7: Two thefts from vehicles, one aggravated assault, and one property burglary.

June 8: One theft from vehicle

Be safe out there! Keep any “stuff” out of sight in your cars as the usual electronics (iPods, phones, computers) seem to always be the target.

You may or may not know that when you upload your photo(s) on Flickr, you can “geo-tag” them, providing a location for each photograph. Photographer Eric Fischer has taken the geo-tagged information and turned it into maps that indicate tourists that have posted photos (the red lines and dots) versus the locals (the blue lines and dots). The resident photos are determined by those who posted photos in the city “dated over a range of a month or more,” while the tourists are “people who seem to be a local of a different city and who took pictures in this city for less than a month.” The yellow dots and lines are those who can be either tourist or a resident, and it couldn’t be determined which was which.

The map above shows a zoomed-in view of the “Los Angeles and Pasadena” map. Quite a few tourist shots going on there! Click on the map to view the full map and more of Eric Fisher’s geo-tag maps for other parts of Los Angeles.

Also – shoutout to LAist for its article today on the maps!

I've only found two pictures of Manewitz and they are both slightly creepy.

Big news! A suspected communist was arrested at his apartment at 1420 Echo Park Ave. and charged with “teaching and advocating overthrow of the U.S. government by violence”… on September 17, 1952.

Echo Park was home to a lot of communists and socialists during the couple of decades after the first Red Scare (in the 1920’s) and before the second Red Scare (in the 1950’s). However, it’s difficult to find information on the group’s activities as it is (understandably) not widely published. Most of the information we have are personal accounts and newspaper articles. That’s where the handy-dandy Los Angeles Times archive at the L.A. Public Library comes in!

I found an interesting little nugget of an article about a man named Robert Manewitz who was picked up by the FBI at his apartment in Echo Park. A long-time Communist Party member and the son of Russian immigrants, Manewitz first started organizing laborers and protests in the Midwest in the 1930’s. According to the article, he came to Los Angeles from Missouri in order to “take over the duties of some of California Communist Party leaders who had been arrested on similar charges of Smith Act violations.”

The Smith Act is a statute that basically says it’s illegal to do or say anything that could be seen as an attempt to overthrow the U.S. government. And you wanna know the really fun part? Although most of the cases under it were thrown out as unconstitutional, it’s still on the books today.

And what did Manewitz say to the press? “He refused to comment on the charges against him, saying only: ‘I don’t know what it is all about.'” Good man.

No plans to watch the Laker game tonight? Join your neighbors for the monthly Echo Park Improvement Association meeting to learn about what’s going on in the area.

On the agenda tonight, CD1 and CD13 council reps will update us on any district news (for instance, Alejandra Marroquin, Field Deputy for Garcetti’s office, usually provides updates on issues like the Echo Park Lake Rehab project, among others). Northeast and Rampart Division reps will also address the community on any police updates.

The featured speaker is a rep from Congressman Xavier Becerra’s office.

The meeting takes place from 7:00 – 9:00 pm in Williams Hall at Barlow Hospital (2000 Stadium Way). All are welcome!

Echo Park resident Karen Frimkess Wolff will be having an art opening at a Hollywood studio called Happy later this week.

While the Echo Park artist is known for her sculpture and installations, the artwork that will be displayed, shown above, are new graphite and pencil drawings. From the press release:

Using pure white gesso on press board as her surface, Karen’s landscapes convey a complex visual vocabulary that combine flora and fauna and a treasury of objects that sometimes soar, sometimes lay perfectly still, but always possess deep meaning.  A brilliant draftsman and master storyteller, Karen returns to the simple act of drawing with a sense of aplomb, a hand that is always present and the soul of a gentle soothsayer.

Artist Carlos Ulloa will also be displaying his signature collage silhouettes.

The opening reception is on Friday, June 4 from 6-10:00 pm, and will continue through July 31.

Happy is located at 4675 Hollywood Blvd. Email Paul for more information: paul@happylosangeles.com

Jackie and Dolce by Sonia Paulino

Portrait photographer Sonia Paulino recently created a series of photos documenting both the quadru- and the bipedal citizens of Echo Park. The series is entitled “We Come Here All the Time”: Dog Walkers of Echo Park. The series “documents the diversity of a rapidly gentrifying Los Angeles neighborhood by photographing people with their dogs around the local park. The work evolves from recurring themes about companionship, care, and mutual identity.” It’s also fun to see how much owners resemble their dogs.

We’ve been so fascinated with the Red Car line history as of late, and thought we’d share a couple of old photographs of the Red Cars that passed through Echo Park on the way to Glendale and back. The last Red Car passenger was in 1955.

It’s Memorial weekend, you might want to take a nice walk/hike along the old Red Car property near Corralitas Drive. Click here for directions and more information.

Donate any size and brand diapers all day today at El Centro Del Pueblo – donations go to teen parents and programs that work with infants.

You can drop off your donations until 7:30 pm tonight at El Centro Del Pueblo, located at 1157 Lemoyne Street.

Ice Cream Tasting at Stories

It might be a little cool and cloudy in Echo Park today, but let’s pretend it’s summer and grab your complimentary ice cream samples from Bittersweet treats at Stories Cafe. The store will be serving up flavors like honey lavender and salted caramel, and will be including these flavors in a 5 oz. size on its menu. Stories is located at 1716 Sunset Blvd.

Mooi

Mooi did indeed open up this week, tonight might be a good night to check it out (Thursdays are the new Fridays). They are open until 3:00 pm today for lunch, and 6:00 – 11:00 pm for dinner. QuarryGirl has a rave review of the raw vegan restaurant, so it might be worth check it out.

Take a Hike

Photo via Corralitas Red Car Property

We’ve been doing a lot of research recently about the Red Car routes through Echo Park and Silver Lake, and a recent article on the Corralitas Red Car Property website about the Red Car Trail has got us hankering for a hike. Warm up on Corralitas staircase (with its 133 steep steps) or just start out at the end of Corralitas drive and walk right on up the trail. The mile-long corridor will take you all the way to the corner of Fletcher and Riverside.

Click here for a map of the Red Car Trail from the Corralitas Red Car Property website. The trail is clearly visible on Google maps, click here for a look.

There are a few things going on in Echo Park we wanted to remind our readers about, here goes:

Non-Profit Lease Subsidy:

Today the City Council was supposed to vote on whether or not to remove the $1 per year lease program for non-profit organizations in Los Angeles. It looks like the issue has AGAIN been postponed, this time for June 1, giving you time to contact your council representative and tell them more study needs to be done before eliminating this program. Read more from us at Echo Park Now, as well as The Eastsider LA.

Elysian Park Fundraiser Banquet:

If you haven’t bought your tickets yet, get them soon! The event is June 6, just a week from this coming Sunday. Click here for more info about the event and how to get tickets. Everyone keeps telling me this really is THE Echo Park event of the year!

Neighborhood Council:

It was just yesterday I was talking with a fellow Echo Park resident about how GEPENC (Greater Echo Park Elysian Neighborhood Council) has been inactive since February. Well, with no announcement to the community, they met all of a sudden last night, and the newly elected board members sworn in. The Eastsider LA has the full story.

Upcoming Community meetings:

The Chamber of Commerce meeting was canceled last week, but there is an Elysian Park Support Group meeting on Wednesday, June 2, and an Echo Park Improvement Association meeting on Thursday, June 3. Check our Calendar for more info.
