At the FYF Fest over the weekend, surrounded by so many dang hipsters you wonder where the heck they all came from (Austin?), we found  a little bit of Echo Park amongst the vendors. It was great to see Echo Park businesses at the fest, including Origami Vinyl (with a giant booth!), Backside Echo Park, Blood is the New Black, The Warehouse and The Classroom.

We snapped a few photos of their booths at the fest:

Hipsters rejoice! Tomorrow is the annual Record Store Day – where independently owned record stores across the country celebrate music with special vinyl and CD releases. Echo Park’s Origami Vinyl and Mono Records are participating this year with some special events of their own:

Origami Vinyl

Open at 8:00 am with coffee and snacks from Stories Books & Cafe. Shoppers will be allowed in ten at a time, and the first 300 people get an Origami Vinyl/Generic Surplus Record Store Day tote bag free with purchase. They’ll also have some more special give-aways, and you even go to The Echo patio to listen to your purchases or check in your bag at the “vinyl valet” while you enjoy the show.

Starting at noon on The Echo patio will be eight bands and guest DJs – but if you can’t make it to the show check out the live stream at radio.magicmonsterrecords.com. Bands include:

Big Black Delta @ 7:00 pm
Henry Clay People @ 6:00 pm
Electric Guest @ 5:00 pm
Races @ 4:00 pm
Zammuto @ 3:00 pm
Electric Flower Group @ 2:00 pm
Jenny O @ 1:00 pm
All Tiny Creatures @ Noon

Guest DJs spinning in Origami Vinyl:

Jason Kramer from KCRW
Shaun Koplow from Anticon
Jason from Dub Club/Punky Reggae
Matt & Patrick from Light in the Attic
Alyssa Bailey from KXLU
Angela Asistio from KXSC
Jen Ferrer from KXSC
Cristina Ramirez from KXLU
Chris Ziegler from LA Record

Check out the store’s Facebk page for more info.

Mono Records

This will be a great opportunity to finally get our butts over to the new Glendale Boulevard record store, which just opened a few months ago. They’ll have the STAX “Flipside of Stax” 45 boxes available, and of course a sale: All wax under $10 is 20% off, over $10 is 15% off the entire day. Store opens at 10:00 am.

There are a ton of other Los Angeles record store locations celebrating the day, check out LAist for the details.

Origami Vinyl is turning three!

The record store/music venue is celebrating at tonight’s weekly Record Club across the street at El Prado. Bring some cupcakes and some 45’s to spin on the record player any time from 9:00 pm – 12:00 midnight. Perhaps you’ll make some vinyl record themed cupcakes for the occasion?

if you can’t make it tonight, mark your calendars for Record Store Day – a nation-wide event celebrating, you guessed it, record stores – on Saturday, April 21. Origami plans on throwing a grand fiesta with eight bands at The Echo, DJs at Origami Vinyl, giveaways, and we’re sure much much more.

Read more about Origami Vinyl on just-published interview on LAist.

Today’s free event at The Echo is inspired by frustrations with Frank McCourt’s handling of the Dodgers – so Origami Vinyl is organizing an “investor group to buy the Dodgers,” and is having a party to celebrate.

Today, at The Echo, enjoy a BBQ with free Dodger Dogs, veggie dogs, peanuts, and Cracker Jacks. They’ve also invented a drink called “The Vin Scully” for $5, Heinekens for $6.

Journalist Susan Hirasuna covered the Summer Fling Truck earlier tonight in front of Origami Vinyl in Echo Park. We’re not sure what the story is about (it couldn’t be the perpetual food truck debate, Summer Fling Truck only serves up fashion), but she tweeted that the story would air tonight on Fox 11 at 10:00 pm.

Check out that broadcast tower/pole/thingy!

Best Coast (Art Fag Recording, 2009) is a recent discovery for me and I love them. Luckily for me, and you as well, they will be playing Waved Out at the Echo and Echoplex this Saturday, March 27th.

Get this 7″ EP while it’s still in print. If you love thick distortion and heavy reverb, mixed with 1960’s pop sensibility song writing and a stoned-in-California vibe, this is for you.

Origami Vinyl is located at 1816 West Sunset Blvd, (213) 413-3030‎

The Echo is at 1822 Sunset Blvd, (213) 413-8200‎

I stopped by El Prado last night to grab two rounds after work. I’ve been a long time fan of microbrews and Belgian-style ales and it’s such a treasure to have a bar so close to my house that serves these style of beers. I had the Allagash Tripple.

When I was there I noticed that the room was split, almost equally, into wine & beer drinkers. It’s just that type of place. Being a fan of mid-week bar time, this is a great night at El Prado. Tuesday night’s are also Record Club Night, which is hosted by Origami Vinyl. Details for the night can be found on Origami’s blogsite.

All and all, fun times.
