I thought things looked a little different last night when I drove by the new Little Caesars location on Echo Park Avenue. Yesterday the last remnants of Pioneer Chicken were removed and documented by Echo Park residents (posted on The Eastsider LA).

Chicks with Knives, which holds supper club events across Southern California, will be hosting its next supper club in Echo Park on Sunday, April 11. We’re new to Chicks with Knives and the supper club phenomenon, but it sounds incredibly delicious! The company hosts private dinner parties and other food events for what is sort of a social organization that includes dinner (so it’s like an underground restaurant at a private residence, for members only). Every event features food made from “sustainable, organic, local and ethical ingredients.”

A total of 16 spots are available for members. For membership consideration, you can check out their website here.

Price is $64 per person

www.ChicksWithKnives.com for more information.

If you want to bring Chicks with Knives back to Echo Park this year, they are also looking for homes in July and August for upcoming events.

On Saturday, April 24 and Sunday, April 25 the Echo Park Film Center will be teaching a new class called “In-Camera Adventures.”

This two-day workshop will introduce students to the history and theory of in-camera editing as it has been utilized by the avant-garde through screenings and discussions, as well as basic camera operation and hand processing. Each student will conceive and complete their own 3-minute, in-camera edited Super 8 film. All materials and equipment supplied by EPFC.

The limit class size limit is 6 students, so call or email them to reserve your spot. Cost is $100 or $80 for EPFC members.

“Our 311 app for iPhone and Blackberry to launch soon—we had the training today and will announce a big download day for everyone when we hit the streets!” reads a post from Eric Garcetti’s Facebook page.

What exactly is a 311 app? Constituents in District 13 (which includes Echo Park, parts of Hollywood, Thai Town, Little Armenia, Silver Lake,  Atwater Village, Glassell Park and other neighborhoods) will be able to submit “concerns” to the district. Users can submit report problems via the “Garcetti 311” app, including photos of graffiti, reports of deceased animals on the street, illegal dumping, potholes, etc.

The question is whether or not these submissions will actually be read (and by whom?) and if it will improve city efficiency for graffiti removal and filling in those pesky pot holes. According to Garcetti’s blog post, the application uses “geo-tagging technology to automatically provide the problem’s location, simplifying the reporting process for users. During the year-long pilot program, my staff members will submit the requests to the appropriate city departments for action.”

It’s unclear as to whether or not Blackberry will be included in the end-of-the-month release (as mentioned by Garcetti’s Facebook post), but it looks like other platforms (like Google Android, Palm, and Windows Mobile) will be released in the next three months. I don’t have an iPhone but I’ll be happy to test out the Blackberry app when it comes out!

It looks as though the rates for parking in several of Echo Park’s public lots will be decreased in the near future. According to The Eastsider LA:

The following lots will be affected:

Lot 643: 1147 Echo Park Ave., Echo Park, CA 90026
Lot 662: 1152 Lemoyne St., Echo Park, CA 90026
Lot 663: 1146 Logan St., Echo Park, CA 90026
Lot 676: 1146 Glendale Blvd., Echo Park, CA 90026
Lot 679: 1711 Sunset Blvd., Echo Park, CA 90026

The rates will be decreased from $1.00/hr to $0.25/30 min; and the daily maximum rate will be decreased from $4.00 to $2.50 for 10 hours, with the exception of Lot 643. Lot 643 will have a maximum rate of $1.00 for 2 hours.

Sweet! Maybe now we’ll see fewer FAIL-ed meters! Honestly, I’d rather just put a quarter in the damn thing and not have to worry about getting a ticket.

On Tuesday, April 13, 826LA will be hosting an exclusive screening of the film Drones at the Egyptian Theater (6712 Hollywood Blvd.).

Drones is full of 826LA volunteers! It was written by Ben Acker and Ben Blacker, directed by Amber Benson and Adam Busch, and stars Marc Evan Jackson, Paul F. Tompkins, Samm Levine, James Urbaniak and Dave (Gruber) Allen. The exclusive screening will be followed by a Q&A with cast and crew, moderated by Kevin Pollak. Tickets are priced at 3 levels: $15 balcony, $30 general admission, $100 preferred seating with VIP after-party.

We hope you will join us to celebrate this film and help raise vital funds for 826LA in the meantime. If you like science fiction and love, you must see this movie!

Today (Monday, April 5), Echo Park’s newest salon is opening its doors. Rock Paper Salon will be offering hair cutting and coloring services in what looks to be a very elegant atmosphere. The salon’s basic offerings include cuts for men starting at $40 and cuts for women starting at $60. A little more about their hair philosophy:

We just want to make you look good and walk out happy. We know what is in style but aren’t trying to make you look like a hot topic catalog model, or some band that is so hot on pitchfork.com right now. No matter what your age or taste is we can point you in the right direction with your look.

Nice. Also, they have a community bookshelf from which you can borrow a book if you bring in one that you’re finished with. No word on their exact hours yet, but you can give them a call at 213-250-0900 or go here to make an appointment online. The store is located at 1515 W. Sunset Blvd.

I See Hawks in LA

“Southern California is a land of strange, dangerous and beautiful contrasts. A mountain lion prowls outside the tract home bedroom of a teenage girl while she talks, oblivious to its existence, on her cell phone. A rattlesnake slithers across an empty shopping mall parking lot on a hot summer night while the employees count up the days profit and turn out the lights. While paparazzi chase the latest talent free celebrity, a talented, literate bunch of soulful musicians create honest and wise roots music for the ages. I See Hawks are indeed one of California’s unique treasures.” – Dave Alvin

Wheelhouse

Wheelhouse is Brian Whelan calling in every favor in his back pocket. A solo debut ten years in the making, Whelan has combined LA’s rich Americana history with the younger, snottier indie-rock of the city’s present day. As a member of the Broken West, Whelan explored the new(ish) frontiers of the independent music world, and while backing up Mike Stinson, Randy Weeks and Tony Gilkyson learned the ancient art of honky-tonking. Whelan loves the rock ‘n’ roll of Buddy Holly the way most of us love our mothers – don’t miss the chance to catch him live and in person. Band features Broken West leader Ross Flournoy and former Everest members Rob Douglas and Derrek Brown. The Grand Ole Echo

Mars Arizona

No, you can’t get there from here. You can stare at the map all you want and you won’t find it. Mars Arizona has a population of two, and is best apprehended with the ears.High Desert is the fourth album from Mars Arizona, the name Nicole Storto and Paul Knowles use when they’re fashioning their brew of country, rock, and roll. As a matter of practice they’re joined by some talented helpers including drummers Billy Block (Frank Black) and Ken Coomer (Uncle Tupelo and Wilco), fiddler Ollie O’Shea (Hank Williams III) and lap steel guitarist Paul Laques (I See Hawks In L.A.), and a host of others. – The Grand Ole Echo
