Health

HEALTH presumably have a saying: if you do something right once, remix, remix again. They did it two years ago with HEALTH/DISCO, which included remixes of HEALTH tracks by Pictureplane, CFCF, Nosajthing, and of course Crystal Castles, whose version of “Crimewave” threatened to be more popular than HEALTH’s original for a short while. In keeping with this tradition, HEALTH have announced DISCO2, to be released June 22 on Lovepump United.

Like the previous remix album, DISCO2 collects reworkings of tracks from the studio album that preceded it (a little gem called GET COLOR [TMT Review]). Crystal Castles and a few of the same guys from HEALTH/DISCO are back for more, but there are also remixes by Javelin, Small Black, Gold Panda, Tobacco, and Salem. The album’s single and opening track, “USA BOYS,” was mixed by producer Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode). And the excitement just keeps coming: HEALTH are topping it off with a US tour, ending with Lollapalooza in Chicago.Tiny Mix Tapes

Echo Park resident Karen Frimkess Wolff will be having an art opening at a Hollywood studio called Happy later this week.

While the Echo Park artist is known for her sculpture and installations, the artwork that will be displayed, shown above, are new graphite and pencil drawings. From the press release:

Using pure white gesso on press board as her surface, Karen’s landscapes convey a complex visual vocabulary that combine flora and fauna and a treasury of objects that sometimes soar, sometimes lay perfectly still, but always possess deep meaning.  A brilliant draftsman and master storyteller, Karen returns to the simple act of drawing with a sense of aplomb, a hand that is always present and the soul of a gentle soothsayer.

Artist Carlos Ulloa will also be displaying his signature collage silhouettes.

The opening reception is on Friday, June 4 from 6-10:00 pm, and will continue through July 31.

Happy is located at 4675 Hollywood Blvd. Email Paul for more information: paul@happylosangeles.com

Jackie and Dolce by Sonia Paulino

Portrait photographer Sonia Paulino recently created a series of photos documenting both the quadru- and the bipedal citizens of Echo Park. The series is entitled “We Come Here All the Time”: Dog Walkers of Echo Park. The series “documents the diversity of a rapidly gentrifying Los Angeles neighborhood by photographing people with their dogs around the local park. The work evolves from recurring themes about companionship, care, and mutual identity.” It’s also fun to see how much owners resemble their dogs.

One of Echo Park’s vintage and modern clothing boutiques, Haute Olive, is moving downtown to the Fashion District. Their new location will be at 838 S. Spring Street (between 8th and 9th Ave.). Their hours will be Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday from noon to 7:00 pm. No word yet from Amara on why she decided to move, but I’m sure she’ll get a lot more walk-ins in the Fashion District than she would underneath the Glendale/Sunset bridge.

This photo, taken a couple of hours ago in Echo Park, reads “No Phone Zone.” Possibly part of Oprah’s campaign to encourage people to put down their cell phones while driving.

The last sobriety checkpoint was not too long ago (on May 5), but another one has already been set up in Echo Park for the Memorial Day weekend drivers. The Cinco de Mayo DUI checkpoint had three DUI arrests, 15 citations issued, and 14 cars impounded (stats from Captain Bill Murphy).

The checkpoint is located at Sunset Blvd. and Portia, just in front of Little Joy and A Grocery Warehouse.

No reason to get down about the DUI checkpoint. If you’re looking for a place to hang out for a while, ECOS vintage store is having a DUI checkpoint sale with 50% off vinyl records (located at 1529 Sunset Blvd.).

Be careful out there! The checkpoints usually last until midnight or sometimes a little later.

We’ve been so fascinated with the Red Car line history as of late, and thought we’d share a couple of old photographs of the Red Cars that passed through Echo Park on the way to Glendale and back. The last Red Car passenger was in 1955.

It’s Memorial weekend, you might want to take a nice walk/hike along the old Red Car property near Corralitas Drive. Click here for directions and more information.

Diaper Drive

Donate any size and brand diapers all day today at El Centro Del Pueblo – donations go to teen parents and programs that work with infants.

You can drop off your donations until 7:30 pm tonight at El Centro Del Pueblo, located at 1157 Lemoyne Street.

Ice Cream Tasting at Stories

It might be a little cool and cloudy in Echo Park today, but let’s pretend it’s summer and grab your complimentary ice cream samples from Bittersweet treats at Stories Cafe. The store will be serving up flavors like honey lavender and salted caramel, and will be including these flavors in a 5 oz. size on its menu. Stories is located at 1716 Sunset Blvd.

Mooi

Mooi did indeed open up this week, tonight might be a good night to check it out (Thursdays are the new Fridays). They are open until 3:00 pm today for lunch, and 6:00 – 11:00 pm for dinner. QuarryGirl has a rave review of the raw vegan restaurant, so it might be worth check it out.

Take a Hike

Photo via Corralitas Red Car Property

We’ve been doing a lot of research recently about the Red Car routes through Echo Park and Silver Lake, and a recent article on the Corralitas Red Car Property website about the Red Car Trail has got us hankering for a hike. Warm up on Corralitas staircase (with its 133 steep steps) or just start out at the end of Corralitas drive and walk right on up the trail. The mile-long corridor will take you all the way to the corner of Fletcher and Riverside.

Click here for a map of the Red Car Trail from the Corralitas Red Car Property website. The trail is clearly visible on Google maps, click here for a look.

The 826LA online store has some new posters for sale. Designed by Amy Martin, the time travel posters are pretty awesome:

On Sunday, June 6 from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm (just five days before the start of the World Cup!!), the Outpost for Contemporary Art will be hosting Futbol Day in Vista Hermosa Park.

“The Beautiful Game, beautiful art and beautiful music will combine at the first Outpost Cup, a June 6 fundraiser to support Outpost’s next cycle of residencies that will bring six South American artists and collectives to Los Angeles over the next two years. Teams of artists, neighborhood and work groups, competitive players, parents vs. kids, and other categories will compete on the pitch for soccer/futbol/futebol/football glory, along with live music, a variety of performance artists and other performers, food and drink from local restaurants and food trucks and more.”

If you’re interested in registering teams, performing or selling food at the event or sponsoring the festivities may contact Julie Deamer at julie(at)outpost-art.org. Or if you want to sign up to play go here.

Outpost for Contemporary Art is a non-profit, Highland Park-based collective that supports “socially-engaged artists” and that “seeks to engage and enrich Los Angeles communities through cross-cultural exchanges and interdisciplinary projects.”

There are a few things going on in Echo Park we wanted to remind our readers about, here goes:

Non-Profit Lease Subsidy:

Today the City Council was supposed to vote on whether or not to remove the $1 per year lease program for non-profit organizations in Los Angeles. It looks like the issue has AGAIN been postponed, this time for June 1, giving you time to contact your council representative and tell them more study needs to be done before eliminating this program. Read more from us at Echo Park Now, as well as The Eastsider LA.

Elysian Park Fundraiser Banquet:

If you haven’t bought your tickets yet, get them soon! The event is June 6, just a week from this coming Sunday. Click here for more info about the event and how to get tickets. Everyone keeps telling me this really is THE Echo Park event of the year!

Neighborhood Council:

It was just yesterday I was talking with a fellow Echo Park resident about how GEPENC (Greater Echo Park Elysian Neighborhood Council) has been inactive since February. Well, with no announcement to the community, they met all of a sudden last night, and the newly elected board members sworn in. The Eastsider LA has the full story.

Upcoming Community meetings:

The Chamber of Commerce meeting was canceled last week, but there is an Elysian Park Support Group meeting on Wednesday, June 2, and an Echo Park Improvement Association meeting on Thursday, June 3. Check our Calendar for more info.
