The cheese fridge at Cookbook

There’s only one reason why I’m not a vegan – and that’s because of cheese. There’s nothing better than a hand crafted, melt-in-your-mouth Spanish Manchego, or Humboldt Fog or… well that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

It’s even better when you know your cheese – so Cookbook in Echo Park is hosting a few summer cheese classes for you to impress on your next cheese date. The classes are taught by Los Angeles chef, caterer and “cheesemonger” Amanda Brennan.

The class schedule is as follows:

Class 1, August 3rd, The Mystery of Cheese: including cheese basics such as types of cheese, types of milk, seasonality, how to purchase cheese and more.

Class 2, August 10th, Domestic Cheese: including how cheese in America came about, and the strides American farmers are making today to produce beautiful artisanal and farmstead cheeses.

Class 3, August 17th, Exploring France and Switzerland: including each region’s regulations, terroir, and types of animals.

Class 4, August 24th, Exploring Italy and Spain: again including each region’s regulations, terroir, and types of animals.

All cheese classes will run from 7-9pm on Wednesday evenings in August.

$30 for a single class; $100 for all four.

RSVP by emailing Cookbook at marta@cookbookla.com, and indicate which classes you are interested in taking.

The sudden closure of the Save-A-Lot store at the end of last March has prompted a ton of speculation of what should replace the grocery store. Trader Joe’s vs. Fresh & Easy vs. Petco vs. my favorite, a locally-owned farm-to-table type of place. The debate has even given birth to a Facebook page called “Bring Trader Joe’s to Echo Park.”

While we haven’t had any official confirmation of what store is going into the space, located next to the Walgreens at Sunset Blvd. and Logan, the pro-Trader Joe’s Facebook page admin was told by a Walgreens employee that Fresh & Easy is, in fact moving in:

I have gone in and spoken to different employees there [Walgreens] for several months and gotten updates. I just called and they said that Fresh and Easy did in fact get the space and they are going to try to open sometime in December. So it’s cool that there is going to be a market we can all shop at in Echo Park but it would be a little sweeter if there wasn’t some controversy around how they treat their employees.

We’ve contacted Fresh & Easy to confirm this possibility, for now we’re filing this as rumor until we know for sure!

UPDATE:

We asked the Fresh & Easy Facebook page about coming to Echo Park, and here’s what hey had to say: “We add ‘coming soon’ Clapples on our “where we are” map on our website when locations are officially planned and announced. We then announce grand opening dates a few weeks before that event when we’re finally ready to open the doors on a location. As for a location in Echo Park, I don’t show anything on any official lists of ‘coming soon’ locations. But we do love the area and, as with lots of locations, hope to be there someday!”

No lotus flowers in the lake this year, but they are for sale to take home!

We headed down to Echo Park Lake early to get ahold of the Lotus Festival schedule, which is available to anyone at the information booth in the middle of the festival booths. After the jump: Saturday’s schedule and parking tips. You can read about the history of the Lotus Festival by clicking here.

Opening ceremony started at noon, but here’s the rest of the schedule (Sunday’s schedule will be available tomorrow):

Take a break from the festivities at Echo Park Lake on Saturday, July 9, and stop by Montana Cans just up Sunset Boulevard for their one-year anniversary celebration!

From 12:00 noon to 10:00 pm at the store there will be a lot of sales going on, special give-aways for customers, and in-store appearances/signings (these guys know some cool people, so it will be worth checking out!).

PLUS our favorite part – our good friends Whqles are playing a show at 8:00 pm. And they rule. Seriously.

Montana Store LA is located at 1528 1/2 Sunset Boulevard.

See you there!

Unfortunately this story is a sad one, but Echo Park neighbors are coming together out of love tomorrow to raise money for resident Rebecca Zamarripa, who lost her battle with cancer on July 1, just three days before her 39th birthday. Fellow Echo Parkian Becca Dorman wrote about her beloved neighbor in an Echo Park Patch article last week before Zamarripa passed away, calling on the neighborhood to help support the family on Saturday, July 9 at an all-day car wash.

The car wash is still on to help support the family and her children with the financial burden for her treatment. If you’re like me and have been neglecting your car for quite some time now, this is the perfect excuse and the perfect place to spend your dollars. They’ll also be selling an assortment of delicious homemade baked goods.

The car wash starts at 8:00 a.m. at El Centro del Pueblo, located at 1157 Lemoyne St. We haven’t confirmed if there is a suggested minimum donation or not, but there’s certainly no maximum! If you can’t make it tomorrow, there will be another car was at Elysian Heights Elementary School on Saturday, July 16, 2011.

You can also drop off some bills in the many donation jars around Echo Park, including Allston Yacht Club.

Checks can be made out to Ronald C. Tafoya and sent care of El Centro del Pueblo, 1157 Lemoyne St., Los Angeles, CA 90026.

Multimedia Journalist and Los Angeles resident Emily Frost sent us this video she shot recently documenting the Echo Park Time Bank.

Having heard about such projects on the East Coast, she discovered the Echo Park Time Bank and decided to start filming. Emily told us, “It’s a great organization – I loved hanging out with them while shooting.”

Check out Emily’s video below!

If you’re interested in time banking, check out the organization’s website.

The next time banking workshop is a Beekeeping class on Saturday, July 16, 2011 from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm. Learn from Echo Park Time Bank member Leonardo Chalupawicz about how to maintain a colony of your own! The workshop takes place at the Micheltorena School Community Garden, 1511 Micheltorena St. Contact info@echoparktimebank.com for questions.

Summer is a busy time for the Central City Action Committee teams as they raise funds for youth summer programs – beaches, museums, movies, camping, and all things that will keep kids off the streets. Three days of each week during the summer, the youth also actively participate in graffiti removal and community clean-up/beautification projects.

An easy way to support the CCAC is by stopping by their location this week at the old fire station for their rummage sale for some great items including a greenhouse.

The rummage sale takes place at 534 East Edgeware Road from 10:30 am – 7:00 pm through Friday, July 8, 2011.

The Department of Public Works just announced the launch of a new website, www.echoparklake.org, specifically for the upcoming Echo Park Lake rehabilitation project, scheduled to start later this summer. There’s a photo gallery (before and after shots), updated news, and contact information as well as resource links. The website purpose will hopefully serve the community by updating everyone on the project before, during and after. According to the website:

The City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works project team is committed to keeping the community updated on the latest information about the Echo Park Lake Rehabilitation project. We encourage you to bookmark this page, and tell your neighbors about it! It’s the easiest way to know what’s going on with the City’s plans to improve and beautify the lake. You can also submit your questions about the lake improvements to the project team at bpw.pao@lacity.org. We will do our best to respond to you as soon as possible.

The week after the Lotus Festival (July 9-10, 2011), the 18-24 month construction will begin. There wasn’t a whole lot of specific information being circulated about the final project details, but we knew a few Echo Park residents/Echo Park Improvement Association members (Echo Park Now is also a member) had been meeting with the Bureau of Engineering project managers and CD13 reps to hammer out those final details. The EPIA’s June-July 2011 newsletter, EPIAn Ways, actually just published a nice, comprehensive article about the rehabilitation project. Here’s an excerpt from that article with details about the project:

Beer connoisseur and restaurant owner Tony Yanow’s Echo Park venture, Mohawk Bend, started construction last year in the old Ramona Theater, and the restaurant is just about to open. Having remained vacant for about two decades, the 6,000 square foot, 1914 building has undergone quite a transformation – and we got a peak inside!

Get the flash player here: http://www.adobe.com/flashplayer

A couple of weeks ago, a very friendly Paige Reilly (whose email signature casually claims her role in the scheme of things as the “Beer Champion” for Tony’s Darts Away) took me on a tour Mohawk Bend and gave me a full run-down of what’s going on behind those theater doors:

A non-smoking outdoor patio is the first space you’ll notice (where you would, for instance, buy your movie tickets when it was a theater). It will be treated almost like a lounge area with cocktailers.

The Quad is just past the hostess station, where two- and four-tops plus booths (totaling 48 seats) will occupy the space. It’s a seat yourself deal, and while you can order at the bar there will be cocktailers as well.

There’s this really cool concrete community table with high-top seating as you move into further down into the pub/bar area (they had to build it right there, it’s so bulky). Along the right side is the row of bar stools facing a total of 72 taps for beer and six taps for wines. With a focus on California/local brews, wines, and even spirits, they’ll also be making their own juices and even sodas.

Along the left side are also high-top seats, this section facing an open kitchen where you can watch the chefs in action. There’s the “Cadillac of pizza ovens” along with multiple stations – since they will be offering a variety of vegan dishes, they’ve actually duplicated stations so that vegan meals are prepared separately from meat dishes. That means they have two of each: cold tops, fryers, griddles and pizza stations.

The menu isn’t entirely vegan because they are really driving home that they have an “inclusive” menu – so that there’s something for everyone.

At the end of the building, broken up by an enormous wall of glass panels, is the sort-of “formal” dining area. It’s here you can really get a sense the old theater space – the expansive walls of exposed brick give off the original flavor, and they plan to have ivy or some sort of greenery to help make it feel more like an outdoor space. They also installed quite a few beautiful skylights and scaffolding to help that outdoor feel. There’s also a massive fireplace centering the far wall.

Back to what’s really important, more about the booze:

  • Of the 72 taps, 67 are California-only brews
  • 35 are permanent handles and 32 will rotate
  • Every month they will feature one out-of-state brewer, and will host a kick-off event with the brewer on hand
  • Six taps are wine kegs, and will rotate like the beers
  • The bar is fully stocked with 80 bottles spirits, and like the beer and wine will be local or California companies. Since tequila is from Mexico only, there will be California agave spirits (apparently bar manager Keith Taylor makes a mean margarita, and will be serving up other traditional and specialty cocktails)

Back when this whole project started, I was a little worried about big names like Spacecraft leading the design of the new restaurant, fearing it would turn into some over-exaggerated, Hollywood design that wouldn’t fit well with some of the more homey establishments in the community. But I’ve warmed up to Tony, the restaurant, and the concept as a whole (despite a few neighborhood objections when they moved in).

We are all anxiously awaiting the final touches to be made for the grand opening. Actually, the restaurant was supposed to open today, but as with any restaurant opening there are permit delays, final deliveries, and just some last minute details to be sorted. They now expect Mohawk Bend to open in early July, we’re crossing our fingers!

UPDATES:

Eater LA reports the opening will be delayed even more to late July due to some problems with gas pipes or gas lines.

This cutey caught our eye on the Echo Park Animal Alliance Yahoo! group. His name is Patch, he’s 10 months old, and was surrendered by the owner to the North Central Animal Shelter because they had no time – unfortunately he’s been there since April 30, so he needs to get adopted or fostered ASAP.

His shelter ID number (which you can search here) is A1208851.

Patch is an unaltered male, white and yellow brindle German Shepherd Dog and American Staffordshire Terrier. Good with kids, needs some help socializing with other dogs, and isn’t aggressive “just barky.” There’s a video of him to show you just how cute he is!

UPDATE:
Patch has been fostered! But he still needs a permanent home. Contact us if you’re interested in adopting and we’ll get you in touch with the right people.

Another exciting Saturday for Echo Park tomorrow as our community hosts (unofficially, of course) the start of the World Naked Bike Ride. The idea isn’t to just flash Echo Park, downtown, Silver Lake, and the other communities the ride will take the brave bicycle riders through, but to demonstrate “the vulnerability of cyclists on the road and is a protest against car culture.”

And this is, you guessed it, a world-wide event, not affiliated with similar concepts like CicLAvia, and brings some very creative folks out for the ride. To participate, you aren’t required to be naked – they’re just happy you’re helping spread the word that bicycling is much better than driving.

Yet the biggest question is, wouldn’t that be… uncomfortable? You know, riding naked? The wiki page has an answer for us:

Suprisingly, for both women and men, riding naked isn’t especially less comfortable than riding clothed. When riding with clothes on you’re often rubbing against the seams, so in some ways naked riding is comfier! Ride routes will often be chosen with less experienced cyclists in mind, so will avoid hills and be more leisurely in pace, increasing comfort.

I think I’ll pass, but it looks like it will be fun from the sidelines!

To join a ride, you have to sign up and contact the organizers directly. Check out the World Naked Bike Ride website for more details, and if you have young children and you’re concerned about the extra skin being exposed … maybe avoid the area where they’ll be gathering. Departure time is planned for 2:30 pm from Echo Park (click here for details).

There’s also a Facebook page for the Los Angeles ride, which you can check out here.

If you missed it last year, click here for a slideshow from last year’s bike ride via the LA Weekly.

We are very excited for the grand opening for The Classroom LA – a recreational class space created by Echo Park resident and uber entrepreneur Justin Warwick. Also a friend of ours, Justin is the man behind Warwick Vintage store, which used to be along Sunset Blvd., and now The Warehouse – a large vintage and DIY space filled with tons of treasures. If you haven’t checked it out – now’s your chance!

The Classroom offers inexpensive (only $25 each) classes from jewelry making and sewing to terrarium building. They also host private events should you want to take a private class as a group.

Gift certificates for both the store and the classroom are available for $35 – they include a unique and really cute terrarium. We got a peak at these last Saturday at the Citizens Committee to Save Elysian Park annual banquet, where two of them were donated and raffled off – they were pretty awesome!

The Classroom LA grand opening party takes place tomorrow, June 11 from 4-11:00 pm at the Warehouse, located at 1197 W. Sunset Blvd.

Please contact us (213) 482-4089 or info@theclassroomla.com for more information.

See you there!

photo from the Dodgers website

Next Wednesday’s game (June 15) vs. the Reds at Dodger Stadium will kick off the first day of Dodgers Throwback Days, where the team will sport a rendition of the 1940s Brooklyn uniform (we say rendition, because it’s not quite an exact replica of the originals). To tempt you further – the stadium is also offering half off all food and drink that do (and no, alcohol doesn’t count).

Prior to the start of the game, which is 12:10 pm, will be a flyover by several World War II planes in conjunction with Throwback Days.

As usual, there are a few tickets for neighbors in the Echo/Elysian Park and Solano Canyon communities. They are on a first-come, first-serve basis. You can email the Neighborhood Relations Manager Noel Pallais at noelp@ladodgers.comwith your name, the number of tickets you want, your address and phone number. If you want free tickets – make sure to send your request by noon on Friday, June 10th!

If you have any issues with the Stadium, call the Neighborhood Focus Line at (323) 224-2636.
