About the show …
HOME is the works of two southern California artists, Sophia Allison and Cheryl Groff. HOME is a word that means different things to all of us. For some its the place they were born, and for others it is the place they are at, but for all of us it means a place of belonging as well as a place we carry with us. Each artist’s work is a unique expression / exploration of this concept. The works invite the viewer in to each of their respective worlds.Artillery & Ammo is proud to have this show on its walls. Thursday, February 11 – MOCK UP ON MU – 8 PM
A radical hybrid of sci-fi, spy, Western, and even horror genres, Craig Baldwn’s Mock Up On Mucobbles together a feature-length “collage-narrative” based on (mostly) true stories of California’s post-War sub-cultures of rocket pioneers, alternative religions, and Beat lifestyles. Pulp-serial snippets, industrial-film imagery, and B- (and Z-) fiction clips are intercut with newly shot live-action material, powering a playful, allegorical trajectory through the now-mythic occult matrix of Jack Parsons (Crowleyite founder of the Jet Propulsion Lab), L. Ron Hubbard (sci-fi author turned cult leader), and Marjorie Cameron (bohemian artist and “mother of the New Age movement”). Their intertwined tales spin out into a speculative farce on the militarization of space, and the corporate take-over of spiritual fulfillment and leisure-time. More info:http://www.othercinema.com/ FILMMAKER CRAIG BALDWIN IN ATTENDANCE!
Thursday, February 18 – LEFT BANK FILM NIGHT – 8PM
A night of tribute to the Left Bank offshoot of French New Wave cinema. Featuring Chris Marker’s 1962 short experimental Film “La Jetee” (which later inspired Terry Gilliam’s “Twelve Monkeys”) and pioneering director Agnes Varda’s 1965 “Le Bonheur.” Curated and introduced by Rena Durrant, with Q&A to follow.
Friday, February 19 – FIG TREES – 8 PM
“Fig Trees is an extremely challenging work, absolutely innovative, both politically and aesthetically. The film scene needs this urgently: to develop the language of film, to give it a foundation and a background.” Wieland Speck, Berlinale. Fig Trees (2008) is Canadian filmmaker John Greyson’s masterful indictment of the pharmaceutical industry and AIDS policy in Canada and South Africa. Using a whirlwind of biting opera, a perverse countdown of Top-40 AIDS songs, a singing squirrel, and the patron saints of amputees, leather and soldiers, Greyson weaves together the true stories of two prominent AIDS activists, Canadian Tom McCaskell and South African Zackie Achmat. In this breathless, fantastical melange, the activists sing opera, Gertrude Stein celebrates the completion of her 1928 play Four Saints in Three Acts, and as always, Greyson turns a wicked, sharp eye on the intersection of politics, history and community. A lyrical, profoundly effective film, Fig Trees won the Teddy Award for Best Documentary at the 2009 Berlinale. Canadian filmmaker and activist John Greyson has long made daring, aggressively political work that is both provocative and funny. Often incorporating song and history, Greyson works in layered forms of narrative, essay and documentary to ignite our curiosity and celebrate the ways that history contradicts itself. Greyson’s films gnash their teeth at machinated government and a complacent public in a call to action that deftly sparks laughter as often as outrage. Previous films include the lush, haunting LIILES (1996), the AIDS-musical ZERO PATIENCE (1993), as well as URINAL (1998), PROTEUS (2003), UNCUT (1997) and many short works. Greyson will join us fresh from the 2010 Berlinale, where he screens his newest film COVERED. FILMMAKER JOHN GREYSON IN ATTENDANCE!

Thursday, February 25 – SISTER AIMEE DVD RELEASE PARTY – 8 PM
Please join us for the dazzling premiere of SISTER AIMEE: THE MUSICAL! In the big dreams/small budget Depression-era tradition of “Hey kids, let’s put on a show!” this free EPFC youth filmmaking class introduced three dozen students ages 12 – 19 to the musical genre as they learned about one of Echo Park’s most dynamic historic figures. “Sister” Aimee Semple McPherson (1890 – 1944) was a pioneering evangelist and media sensation in the 1920s and 1930s who presented religion as a form of popular entertainment. Angelus Temple, the 5300-seat home of the Foursquare Church built by McPherson in 1923, still stands right around the corner from the Film Center at the edge of Echo Park Lake. Students created original sets, costumes, songs and choreography in bringing the story of Sister Aimee to the silver screen. Project made possible in part by grants from the California Council for the Humanities and the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. This event is FREE and open to the general public… Q& A and refreshments to follow screening. EVERYONE WELCOME! FILMMAKERS IN ATTENDANCE!
wild Up music collective is, in their own words, “a modern music collective, comprised of young Los Angeles area musicians, committed to creating eclectic, vibrant art.”
Tonight they will do just that at Jensen’s Recreation Center (1710 Sunset), one of Echo Park’s coolest historic landmarks. The concert, entitled I See It Coming: songs after Radiohead, will include musical masterworks from the last two and a half centuries. It begins with Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto No. 3” and ends with songs from Radiohead’s “In Rainbows.”
I’m actually a little sad that I already have plans for tonight because this concert looks as though it’s going to be really rad.

A few days ago, we received some comments on our Echo Park Art Hop post regarding the galleries that AREN’T being featured during said event. We tracked down the writer of these comments and found what turned out to be a really cool guy and an awesome gallery that we never knew existed.
Artillery & Ammo is owned by Henry, a long-time Echo Park resident, and the shows are curated by Deryke. The reason that they don’t get a lot of press is because they’re tucked away in that strange spot on Glendale underneath the Sunset bridge. I’ll be writing more about them in another post dedicated to the stores and galleries in that little strip.
In the meantime, you should check out the group show that’s up right now. It’s called “Friends of Ours…” and features three local artists: Bill Donovan, Maureen Sheilds and Patrick Haemmerlein. They’ll be having a hard closing (read: wine and cheese) for the show on Saturday, February 6th around 7 p.m.
I went to here for the first time a few weeks ago to see Black Church and it was great. They got the sound right. The girl working the door was very nice, the bathroom was clean and it wasn’t crazy packed. You can park on Glendale in that far right lane after a certain time at night. It was byob when I was there but I can’t say if that’s an official thing for the venue or not. Wouldn’t want to get anyone in trouble 😉
We arrived at Delilah’s Bakery SUPER early to nab our own citrus tree at the EPIA Fruit/Citrus tree giveaway. Thank you EPIA for our very own Margarita tree…err Lime tree!
There will be another give-away so make sure to reserve your tree and arrive early.
And don’t forget the next EPIA Neighborhood Issues Committee meeting is Wednesday, January 20 from 7-9:00 pm at Williams Hall, Barlow Hospital.

It started with one person, Echo Park resident Barry Walker, who cooked and delivered Turkey Day meals to the homeless in his neighborhood… and now a group of friends in Echo Park have shown up to help cook and deliver meals for the past 10 years – the first year, 28 homeless were fed! The next year more showed up and over fifty meals went out. The following year, we reached the 100 mark and last year we were able to feed over 1,500 homeless in our neighborhood and leave them with t-shirts, beanies, shoes, sweaters, and tooth brush kits. Gobble Gobble Give is a community event and has become an incredible example of what a community can do to make change.
Gobble Gobble Give is looking for volunteers on every level who can give food, money, or clothing and those who can donate their time this upcoming Thanksgiving day (Nov 26th) by cooking, warming, packaging and delivering food to the homeless in Echo Park and Downtown LA. Every little bit helps
those in need, so show some love and give a friend a reason to be thankful.
Click here to donate money to Gobble Gobble Give for supplies and food.
Click here to donate your time on Thanksgiving Day.

“Zombiethon is a community FUN run/walk event held on Halloween, Saturday October 31, 2009, from 4-6:00 pm, along the recreation trail around Silver Lake Reservoir in Los Angeles, California. This event is organized to raise donations for Brain Cancer Research. All of the proceeds will be donated to the local charity, City of Hope, to find a cure for this devastating disease. Your $10 donation will grant you a numbered participation bib and goodie bag! This is a family-friendly event, and everyone is encouraged to arrive in their finest zombie attire. If you don’t have access to zombie make-ups, don’t worry, for an additional donation of $5, you may have your make-up applied by professional special effects make-up artists on site! Not a runner? Don’t worry! It’s not a formal race, just a chance for everyone to get out there and have some fun while supporting a very important cause! Hope to see you all there!”
Check out their website for tips on makeup, costumes, and other zombie-ralated activities!
Bedrock, a rehearsal and recording space, is set to open in Echo Park. This should make many neighborhood musicians pretty happy. For those of us who would otherwise never set foot in a rehearsal space we can still sneak a peak at the opening party on October 25th. RSVP, then when you arrive you’ll be given a map with food and drink tickets. There will be people to answer your questions and this will be a family friendly event so bring your budding musicians, too. Don’t be too quick to think you won’t be hanging out at Bedrock in the future, though. This place has big plans like a coffee house and a microbrewery. A rooftop garden will supply food for the coffeehouse and three hotel suites will be available for rent. They have hourly air conditioned rehearsal rooms starting at $15/hr. Nothing to rehearse with? Check out the store, take your gear to the repair shop or rent instruments and amps right there. They are certainly living up to the word compound. Many a musician in town to record will probably end up living at Bedrock which will make it an local interesting business to keep track of. Keep reading for more info and to see the full list of offerings from the Bedrock website.

Thurs, Oct 1st – PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS presents BENEFIT SHOW for
NIGHT LIGHT with DOMINIC MASSARO and THURLOW performing
This Thursday Plays Well With Other presents FUTURA, a benefit event that will be an impactful night
made up of music and art, with the main focus of bringing awareness to a particular non-profit
organization called Nightlight. This Electronica night will consist of DJ Righteous Trash, Thurlow and
featuring the LA artist Massaro. Massaro’s songs will seduce you with his haunting, beautiful, broken
vocal melodies sung over a brick wall of sea-sick droning guitars. The art will be donated by Sam
Gallagher, Dominic Massaro, and Lawton Outlaw, which scale from a combination of color field paintings
and mixed media paintings to Gary Baseman meets Andy Warhol; surreal cartoon like content that is fun
for the whole family. All of these amazing artists are coming together for the sole reason to help
Nightlight. Nightlight rescues women out of prostitution / sex trafficking in Bangkok, Thailand. A very
prevalent problem with these rescued women is that have been trafficked often fall back into
prostitution. This occurs because they aren’t given the opportunity or resources to learn other skills to
make a living and survive. That’s where Nightlight comes in. They teach the women how to make jewelry
then Nightlight sells it in places like the United States and through that funding, these women are given
the chance at a new life.
