We’re a little late on the announcement for this event, but happening right now, from noon to 4:00 pm, Gabriella Charter School is hosting a FREE Community Arts Festival!

The event promises a lot of family-filled fun, including face painting, student performances, activities for toddlers, music, art and more.

There’s also a Spanish version of the flyer, which you can view here.

Gabriella Charter School is located at 1435 Logan Street. Entrance to the festival is on Lemoyne between Montana and Scott.

We ran an article late last week announcing the closure of 24-year-old Echo Park/HiFi club Dinner House M. Today, the LA Times reports the closure is due to one of two (or maybe both?) factors: A revoked liquor license, and/or increased and unaffordable rent.

Apparently, the liquor license issue revolves around multiple citations for serving after 2:00 am. Sgt. Fernando Garcia of the Rampart Division told the LA Times: “It was well known as an after-hours club. They had their license revoked, they appealed, and they lost the appeal.”

However owner Miki Saito denies the license is being revoked, and told the LA Times that a rent increase is the issue.

Either way, the final send-off (with a four-piece jazz band and Miki at the mic) is next week on Wednesday, June 8.

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I’ve been get a lot of questions and emails about the fate of this year’s Cuban Music Festival, held annually at Echo Park Lake.

We did track down the official organizers of the event for more info, but we have some bad news: The Echo Park Lake Cuban Music Festival is indeed canceled this year.

According to the event organizers (which Echo Park Now is not affiliated with), Duval Productions, lack of funding has caused enough issues to postpone the event until next year. They told us, in an email:

We had planned to have it on Sunday May 22, but encountered a number of obstacles with the production this year, from the unavailability of the park to the loss of valuable donations. We have exhausted our efforts to raise the necessary funds to support the event but have not been successful.

With the Echo Park Lake renovation starting in July this year, and lasting for two years, we’re not sure where next year’s Cuban Music Festival will happen, but hopefully nearby!

Visit the Duval Productions website for more information.

EPCAP Workshops

Creative Writing with Contemporay Art with Lauren Strasnick (YA Fiction author) from 1-2:00 pm

Exploring Light and Photography with David Starkopf (official photographer for Mayor Villaraigosa) from 2-3:00 pm

Sandwiched between a bargain store and, well, I believe, another bargain store (formerly a you-know-what kind of coop) on Sunset Boulevard is an Echo Park art gallery space. Formerly Bandit Gallery, it now holds the name Sancho Gallery, and – for a week – it’s the place of the Echo Park Community Art Project (EPCAP).

EPCAP is a nonprofit event aimed at provided youth in Echo Park and the area with basic art supplies like pens, pencils, and paper. They are curating art that has been donated by young, local artists from high school students, non-professional artists, and even some bigger local names. 100% of the money raised with the sale of these art pieces fund these “Art Survival Kits” – hand-printed tote bags filled with bi-lingual educational materials that “equip individuals with tools for making and exploring art.”

This weekend, they’ll have an opening celebration and a weekend full of free workshops, from photography to creative writing to animation, and are open to all ages.

EPCAP is curated by nonprofit team the Negative Space Curation, led by art-lovers Meredith “Mere” Rosenbluthand Angela Gonzalez Hall. Mere is a Los Angeles native as well as a curator, educator, writer, photographer and printmaker. Angela is also a curator, educator, writer, and gallery enthusiast, and she’s completely in love with LACMA.

In a press release, the curators told us about why they created this event:

“The idea for this project came from a shared love of art, a deep belief in the importance of art education, anda frustration with some of the systems that the art worldis hinged upon—namely, that of commerce, of the gallery, of an elite space that only few can truly access and that reaches out to a very select public.”

Yesterday, we checked out EPCAP and are excited about their project, even bought some Peter Shire ceramics (score!). It’s for a good cause, and all the neighbor kids should go check it out (we hear all they have to do is talk about their favorite piece of art to snag a bag).

Check it out:

Echo Park Community Arts Project
Sancho, 1549 Sunset Blvd.
May 9-15, 2011 from 12-7:00 pm
Opening celebration: Friday, May 13, 2011 from 7-10:00 pm
Workshops: Saturday and Sunday, May 14 and 15

Please visit the EPCAP website for details about the free workshops going on this weekend!

PS the are also participating in this weekend’s Echo Park PDA/Art Walk (which we’ll dedicate another article to).

I might be too young to remember when these came out (okay, perhaps I wasn’t born yet), but I’m not unfamiliar with the poster artwork David Edward Byrd – the artist who brought you the original Woodstock poster, the “Tommy” poster for The Who, The Rolling Stones, and many, many more.

Bedrock Studios here in Echo Park is hosting a 70th Birthday Art Show and reception for David Edward Byrd on Saturday, May 7, from 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm.

Original works and artist-signed prints will be available at the event, from affordable to collectible ($10 prints, on up to priceless originals). They’ll also be including the artwork on the new Bedrock online store, launching after the event at www.bedrockla.com

Pins & Needles (the vintage pinball arcade next door) are also setting up a “playroom” of vintage rock-themed pinball arcade games. There will also be food and drink, live music, and online specials for the new store.

Bedrock Studios is located at 1623 N. Allesandro Street

My answer is simple: We have no idea!

But we’ve been getting a LOT of emails about this – like, a LOT. So we’ll try and clear things up for everyone excited for a day of congas and Cuba!

First off, the Cuban Music Festival is an annual event at Echo Park Lake – this year marks the 17th. It celebrates Cuba’s Independence from Spain on May 20, and Cuban poet José Martí (you may have notice his statue at the corner of the park).

The festival is usually held on the closest Sunday to that May 20th date – making this year’s Cuban Festival maybe on May 22, 2011. I have not gotten this confirmed by any event organizers, but would love to hear back from them soon and will let everyone know as soon as I know!

I am very much looking forward to the meeting/social/fundraiser/mixer tonight for the Echo Park Improvement Association (as a committee member, I’ve been involved in the organization and this event).

At this particular meeting, the EPIA will have representatives from CD1, CD13, and the Northeast and Rampart Divisions to provide updates on community issues. Oftentimes there will also be input from other community members for event announcements and other comments. In between those agenda items, there will be cocktails, raffles (lots of great stuff from local eateries and businesses), and other goodies. It’s a great way to get involved!

Hope to see you tonight at 7:00 pm at Taix!!

On Saturday, March 26, LA Works is partnering up with the Greater Echo Park Elysian Neighborhood Council to accomplish a unique community service project in honor of Cesar Chavez’s March 31 birthday.

Expert muralists, volunteers and civic leaders will oversee volunteers and LAUSD students in the creation of five to ten community justice and human rights-themed murals. The murals will be donated to schools and libraries around Los Angeles.

Andres Chavez, grandson of Cesar Chavez, will be a guest speaker at the event. He was “raised in the tradition of the farm worker movement that his grandfather, César Chávez, founded. He has participated in United Farm Workers’ marches, rallies, picket lines, union conventions, and political campaigns, including those for immigration reform.”

Former State Senator Richard Polanco (who helped make March 31, Chavez’s birthday, a state holiday in 2000) will also be a guest speaker.

The program begins at 9:00 am on Saturday, March 26 at Echo Park Lake. Full details and directions are provided to you after you register. You can register to volunteer by visiting the LA Works website.
