LAist brings this 2007 video to our attention after the news of Amy Winehouse’s death. According to the article, the video titled “Tears Dry on Their Own” was shot in Hollywood as well as partly in Echo Park, so we’re posting it as well because, of course, Echo Park rules. Enjoy the video (see if you can spot our ‘hood anywhere, it’s brief) and enjoy your life being healthy and happy and appreciating the ones you love!

Take a break from the festivities at Echo Park Lake on Saturday, July 9, and stop by Montana Cans just up Sunset Boulevard for their one-year anniversary celebration!

From 12:00 noon to 10:00 pm at the store there will be a lot of sales going on, special give-aways for customers, and in-store appearances/signings (these guys know some cool people, so it will be worth checking out!).

PLUS our favorite part – our good friends Whqles are playing a show at 8:00 pm. And they rule. Seriously.

Montana Store LA is located at 1528 1/2 Sunset Boulevard.

See you there!

Tomorrow (Saturday, July 9) marks the first of weekend “Brunch Jams” at The Warehouse. Feeling the need for some more brunching variety in Echo Park, owner Justin Warwick was inspired to team up with a food truck to host the morning fiestas from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays on the vintage store patio in Echo Park.

Here’s the scoop: Grab some brunch from the food truck (especially useful on those hangover mornings), stir up a Bloody Mary or Mimosa, and enjoy the serenades of a live Beetles jazz trio. Yep, it all starts tomorrow!

And lastly, your sneak peak of The Jade Chef menu:

SWEET MORNINGS

  • The Classroom Cakes: (2) blueberry pancakes, organic maple syrup, sweet cream butter
  • Hot Red Velvet Cakes: (2) cream cheese drizzle, sweet cream butter, fresh seasonal berries
  • Yogurt sweetened with agave (add $2.00 fresh fruit)
  • Toast and artisanal jam choice breads, Laura Ann’s Jam of the day, sweet cream butter

UPDATE:

The Warehouse announced Friday night that brunch has been canceled this weekend due to permitting issues.

An NPR blog post published yesterday calls attention to this cool music video complete with some stylish underwater shots. The location for those shots? Our very own Echo Park Pool!

The video is for the Los Angeles-based group Warpaint. Director Ted Newsome told NPR, “We all agreed that the surface world would be void of color and unstable and underwater would be vibrant, dreamy and fluid. A few days later, we shot for three days straight, and the video was in the can…. The dreamy water world was obviously the hardest part of the video, and there’s a behind-the-scenes video to prove it.”

Newsome, by the way, is one of the founders of 2HeadedHorse, which has a building on Glendale Boulevard in Echo Park. Hopefully the behind-the-scenes video from him will come out soon!

Echo Park resident Isabelle Dahlin opened up her new store, deKor, at the end of June just next door to the new restaurant Mohawk Bend on Sunset Boulevard. Promising a variety of candles, pottery, furniture, art, pillows and miscellaneous items, the theme is an eclectic array of Swedish stylings that will make you want to redecorate.

On her blog, Isabelle writes: “Ever since I was a child, I have always felt that your living environment greatly impacts how you feel about your life and how you treat those around you. This space is a reflection of my Scandinavian roots, my travels and my beautiful life in Los Angeles.”

Isabelle told us that not only does she live in Echo Park, but she’s in LOVE with Echo Park. “I wanted my store here because I love the people that live here and deKor is a very eclectic place so I think it fits with this amazing neighborhood,” she said in an email.

Prices range from $20 for the little stuff, and up to $4,000 for the larger furniture items (hey, it’s art!). Her favorite piece in the store? Reclaimed swings designed by deKor that can decorate your home on the inside or the outside.

By the way, LOVE those potted succulents outside the store!

Store Hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 am – 8:00 pm.

We allllmost missed this on the radar, but this is the last weekend for the 2011 Los Angeles Film Festival, and there are still quite a few amazing films still scheduled for screenings.

One of those films is Mamitas, which has gotten some pretty rave reviews and awards since its release in 2007, was filmed all over Echo Park. Directed by Nicholas Ozeki, the film is about a young casanova trying to teach his friends how to hit on girls. Here’s the synopsis from the LA Film Fest website:

“At school, Jordin is a cocky but charming Latino firebrand; at home he is a doting grandson who can’t seem to please his perpetually cranky father. On the day he’s suspended for insulting a teacher, Jordin meets Felipa, a bookish, no-nonsense New York girl who sees past the swaggering facade. The two immediately embark on an unlikely friendship that inspires Jordin to find out who he really is.

“Beautifully shot in Echo Park and against Los Angeles’ downtown skyline, this beguiling coming-of-age romance introduces two phenomenal young actors in EJ Bonilla and Veronica Diaz-Carranza and a remarkable new talent in first time feature filmmaker Nicholas Ozeki.”

And Echo Park looks gorgeous, as always!

You can still get tickets for the two remaining screenings at the festival for tonight’s 10:20 pm showing and tomorrow’s 12:00 noon showing. Click here for tickets and more info.

We managed to track down a trailer for your sneak peak!

Another exciting Saturday for Echo Park tomorrow as our community hosts (unofficially, of course) the start of the World Naked Bike Ride. The idea isn’t to just flash Echo Park, downtown, Silver Lake, and the other communities the ride will take the brave bicycle riders through, but to demonstrate “the vulnerability of cyclists on the road and is a protest against car culture.”

And this is, you guessed it, a world-wide event, not affiliated with similar concepts like CicLAvia, and brings some very creative folks out for the ride. To participate, you aren’t required to be naked – they’re just happy you’re helping spread the word that bicycling is much better than driving.

Yet the biggest question is, wouldn’t that be… uncomfortable? You know, riding naked? The wiki page has an answer for us:

Suprisingly, for both women and men, riding naked isn’t especially less comfortable than riding clothed. When riding with clothes on you’re often rubbing against the seams, so in some ways naked riding is comfier! Ride routes will often be chosen with less experienced cyclists in mind, so will avoid hills and be more leisurely in pace, increasing comfort.

I think I’ll pass, but it looks like it will be fun from the sidelines!

To join a ride, you have to sign up and contact the organizers directly. Check out the World Naked Bike Ride website for more details, and if you have young children and you’re concerned about the extra skin being exposed … maybe avoid the area where they’ll be gathering. Departure time is planned for 2:30 pm from Echo Park (click here for details).

There’s also a Facebook page for the Los Angeles ride, which you can check out here.

If you missed it last year, click here for a slideshow from last year’s bike ride via the LA Weekly.

We are very excited for the grand opening for The Classroom LA – a recreational class space created by Echo Park resident and uber entrepreneur Justin Warwick. Also a friend of ours, Justin is the man behind Warwick Vintage store, which used to be along Sunset Blvd., and now The Warehouse – a large vintage and DIY space filled with tons of treasures. If you haven’t checked it out – now’s your chance!

The Classroom offers inexpensive (only $25 each) classes from jewelry making and sewing to terrarium building. They also host private events should you want to take a private class as a group.

Gift certificates for both the store and the classroom are available for $35 – they include a unique and really cute terrarium. We got a peak at these last Saturday at the Citizens Committee to Save Elysian Park annual banquet, where two of them were donated and raffled off – they were pretty awesome!

The Classroom LA grand opening party takes place tomorrow, June 11 from 4-11:00 pm at the Warehouse, located at 1197 W. Sunset Blvd.

Please contact us (213) 482-4089 or info@theclassroomla.com for more information.

See you there!
