Sunday is family day at the Lake and it’s no different in the bird world. Being a night owl and working days, weekends are the only times I get the chance to stop by the Lake and take in all that’s going on. But what I’ve been hearing from those who have the determination to make it down there for early a.m. walks is that there are some sights to been seen… these are the hours that the birds run the lake.
This week we would like to welcome Dale Dreiling as Echo Park Now’s first guest blogger. I couldn’t say it better myself so I shall quote from Dale’s website. Dale “is a visual artist whose life and work reflect the unique spirit of the coastal west. Raised in Ventura, California, he received a BFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2001. His work has been exhibited in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Detroit, Portland, Seattle, Oakland & Nakano, Japan. He has designed & illustrated for Converse, Urban Outfitters, Upper Playground, LA Record, HIT+RUN, FunNotFame, Saiko Headwear, Bee House Records & the LA Beat Swap Meet.” Dale is also a resident of Echo Park so we have asked him to come on board this week to share some musings on the neighborhood. He has his own blog here where you can learn more about his art and his life. You can see some of Dale’s paintings at Chango coffee shop through April 4th. Chango is located at 1559 Echo Park Ave.
There will now be shuttle buses running between Dodger’s Stadium and Union Station before, during and after Dodger games. Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich secured a $300,000 grant from from the Mobile Sources Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee to run the service. The fleet will be comprised of “state-of-the-art 40-foot clean-burning compressed natural gas buses.” The best part is that the buses will be free to those who have tickets for the game. Here are some more details regarding the schedule:
- Pre-Game – service will be provided on a 10 minute frequency from 90 minutes prior to game up to the 3rd inning.
- Mid-Game – service will be provided on a 30 minute frequency between the 3rd inning and 7th inning
- Post-Game – service will be provided “load and go” from 7th inning to 45 minutes after game ends

We’ve been toying around with the idea of re-posting any Missed Connections that occurred in Echo Park for a while now, but they can be few and far between. Well, I found a couple of gems from the past few days and thought I’d give them a little bit more exposure… and maybe help destiny out a little bit.
Cute girl at Masa (m4w) – Posted on Thursday, March 11 http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/mis/1640018969.html “I was studying with some friends and probably looking like quite the nerd with notecards in hand, but we made eye contact a couple of times. Right after leaving I kept complaining to my friend that I should’ve talked to you (ideally I would’ve been super suave and walked up to you, dropped my number and said “Hope this is your brother”). Really though, I hope that was your brother, friend, or platonic hipster roommate you were with. You were wearing a seafoam green vneck and I haven’t had anyone catch my eye like that in awhile. And now I am posting on Craigslist. Want to get coffee? Tell me something that lets me know it’s you.”
Short Stop last night (27) – Posted on Friday, March 12 http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/mis/1641063745.html “We sat at the end of the bar and made fun of [people] around us. We couldn’t understand why someone would wear a red sweater with no undershirt. You stepped outside for air but never came back. I hope to run into you Monday around the same time.”
At last! Literary happenings at 826LA geared towards grown-ups! 826LA will be hosting book clubs at both their Echo Park and their Venice locations. They’ll be reading one book per month beginning this month. The first meeting of the 826LA East Book Club will be on Thursday, March 25 from 8:00 to 9:30 pm. This month’s book is Consider the Lobster by David Foster Wallace, and if you purchase it from Skylight Books in Los Feliz, you’ll receive 15% off your purchase! 826LA Echo Park is located at 1714 W. Sunset Blvd.
This Sunday, March 14 the Los Angeles Wheelmen will be hosting their several-ish annual Fargo Street Hill Climb. Legend has it that Fargo Street in Echo Park is the steepest street in L.A. with a 32% incline. For many years now the Los Angeles Wheelmen have been challenging riders to see how many times they can ride up it in one day. The record is held by Steve Gilmore who in 2008 rode up it 101 times! Starting time is 9:00 am and the starting location is the intersection of Fargo St. and Alejandro St. (near the south end of the Glendale Freeway).
You heard it here first, folks. This Saturday, March 13 at 7:00 pm, Artillery & Ammo will be holding an opening reception for their BEST GROUP SHOW EVER. The show will feature over 25 artists from LA and elsewhere and will be up until April 6. At Artillery & Ammo, an opening reception pretty much equals a party, so I suggest strollin’ on down to 1162 Glendale Blvd. this Saturday to check it out.
Abe Vigoda, Lovvers, and The Black Apples will be playing tonight The Echo at 8:30pm.
“Along with Women, Dirty Projectors and Wavves, Abe Vigoda is chipping away at our expectations of how a 21st century rock band should function.
“Reviver doesn’t simply take the concepts laid down in Skeleton and give them a novel new twist. Instead, this is the sound of a completely different band, barely recognizable from the fumbling, itchy and trebly guitars that prickled through tracks like “Dead City/Waste Wilderness” from the preceding record. They’ve undergone a process of attrition, of paring down the Abe Vigoda sound until it represents something totally new. All the energy and ideas poured into their music have been un-learned and spewed out into a different musical space.” – Prefix Mag

For all of you Terry fans (I just love his character on Reno 911), the Nick Swardson Sketch Show will be filming off of Academy Road in Elysian Park on Monday, March 8 from 7am-10pm.
The 6 episode sketch show is set to debut some time this year.
According to the filming notice, the filming will involve: “Campsite scene. No special effect. No fire. Exterior dialogue. Filming off fire road in woodsy area on Elysian Park Drive. Filming on grassy area adjacent to parking sections 5 and 6. Trucks parked on Elysian Park Drive past gate.” They don’t anticipate the need for a generator or any night-time filming.
For more information you can contact location manager Jesse Cole at 323-956-5000 (office) or 310-266-6905 (mobile).

Tues, Mar 2nd – PEACE, LOVING + HORAFLORA + headlight + LOLA LOSHKEY
Well, we moved our art drop back a day to help out these fine folks, slyly named
PEACE, LOVING travelling from New England, bringing with them a calamitous
cacophony of metal and whirling free jazz. SF’s HORAFLORA also shares this love
of prepared instruments and strange sonic disturbances. Our very own headlight,
on the other hand, will seem like a gentle dream, a synth-based slalom into the
abyss. And also recently added is the newly developed LOLA LOSHKEY, a
frightening trip into the realm of dead pets, stuffed unicorns and skeleton suits.

Wed, Mar 3rd – ART DROP for the PEOPLE WE KNOW SHOW 7p to 10p
I know, we usually do art drops on Tuesdays, but this one is gonna be Wednesday,
so that we can have the Peace,Loving guys play. But don’t let out tardiness fool
you, we’re super psyched about the phenomenal Rebekkah Clendening coming up
with the idea for this show, and we’ll be featuring many of her portraits of local
figures from the neighborhood. But what kind of neighbors would we be if we didn’
t open up the show to everybody… so come and bring us your portraits, photos,
sculptures and even stories about people you know, people we might get to know!!!
