We posted a mention last April that the old Echo Park Ramona Theater would become a wood-fired pizza and beer restaurant called El Camino. Originally slated to open around Thanksgiving this year, construction just recently started up on the new space and it’s looking like a grand opening will be pushed back.

Here’s a little back story about the Ramona Theater: It opened in Echo Park in the year 1914 as the Garden Theatre. Its name changed a few times (those names somewhat of a mystery, of which Echo Park has many), until 1966 when it became Studio 1 showing German-Language films. It was completely closed down in the 1990s, the front awning giving shelter to many homeless for many years.

Now, who knows what’s going on behind those Spacecraft walls, I can only speculate and summon up some pretty over-imaginative ideas: Perhaps they maintained some kind of stage area where the movie screen was to make it our own Echo Park dinner theater!

Alas, a big wall was put up during construction in the late 1990s led by a member of the Lolito family, which owned the building for about 75 years according to the Echo Park Historical Society. They also leveled the theater floor and removed the theater seats.

So probably no dinner theater, movie theater, or any other type of theater for now, but we do know one thing for sure: Alcohol! Owner Tony Yanow, who also own Tony’s Darts Away in Burbank, just recently applied for a liquor license that includes beer, wine and “distilled spirits” and is currently pending. All I can say is, if the the beer list is as decent as the Darts Away list, you might find me there with a Belgian-style beer in hand (I’ve read that there could be as many as 75 beers on tap at the new location).

However, I am a little wary of big names like Spacecraft and big ideas moving into Echo Park. While I really do welcome the activity at the old theater because it really, really needs it, if the restaurant ends up being an over-priced, chichi Hollywood-type establishment, I’d rather cuddle up with the friendly faces at Masa, The Park and El Compadre.

More worrisome is the lack of parking in the area. We are waiting to hear back from the owner to find out how they are going to deal with that issue, as the neighbors are less than thrilled. Already having to compete with clubs down the street, a lot of housing with not a lot of parking spots, and a big development being planned just down the road, nearby residents might just have to start digging their own driveways just to park near their homes.

Stay tuned – we will provide more info as soon as we know!

The old Ramona Theater is located at 2139 W. Sunset Blvd.

Elf Cafe is re-opoening tomorrow, July 28 (according to the sign on the front door), after a week-long closure for renovations. While we haven’t gotten the final word from the restaurant about what exactly is going on with renovations, they told the Huffington Post last February of plans to expand the restaurant into the space next door (perhaps Branche Boutique, pictured above), which they had just acquired.

We’ll have to see what happens when Elf Cafe re-opens tomorrow!

While it looks like the Echo Park Art Walk may be on hiatus, Feeding Birds still wants Echo Park residents to get out and enjoy the community (and the great weather!) this summer. And so came forth the “Midsummer Flock” block party, located in the area around Feeding Birds from 1825-1830 Echo Park Ave. So far, there will be food trucks, live music, art, sales, and maybe even some silkscreening or stenciling at Feeding Birds. Booked so far is:

  • Summer Fling Truck (print t’s, phone cases and Cool Haus)
  • Over The Moon Cookies (Echo Park baked cookies)
  • I ♥ EP merchandise from artist Bill Rangel
  • Musical guests: DefSound and others, Miles Moore (Earthman)
  • Large photography displays and other art to come

Click here for the Facebook event info as they will be updating it as more activities come up.

LA Flea Market debuted on Sunday, July 18, 2010

Hey, Pasadena, we have a stadium too! And anything you can do we can do… sort of.

Sunday was the first ever Dodgers Stadium flea market, which will be held, barring a Dodgers home game, on the third Sunday of every month. However, if they hope to draw crowds of flea marketers to the parking lot, the organizers need to put a lot more effort into finding decent vendors a month from now. Or they could scrap the flea market and be a food truck party, in which case they would already be winning.

Parking was a breeze, I arrived at about 10:00 am hoping to beat the heat a little bit. The heat won regardless, but such is life when you’re hanging out in a Los Angeles parking lot in the throes of summer. There was a short walk to the ticket booth where I paid my $5 and received my ticket. You could pay with a card and there were the only two ATM machines at the ready, no sign noting these as your last chance for green as these were the last machines I spotted all day.

Not exactly on my list of quality Flea Market finds

Perhaps I have an East Coast bias when it comes to the age of vintage items, or maybe I was spoiled by the Pasadena City College flea market a few weeks ago. When I first walked into the LA Flea Market, I already felt this event was planned around food trucks, Rick Dees, and small business owners. Every fiber of my being routes for the small business to succeed, but today I also had hoped for a true flea market experience.

Everyone goes crazy over Masa’s Chicago-style deep dish pizza, especially when the Cubs come into town and the favorite dish comes half off. Now vegans have more opportunities to join in on the fun – Masa has added an animal-free version of the pizza to its menu.

Chicago Soy Dairy supplies the vegan cheese called “Teese Soy Cheese,” and Masa uses olive oil instead of butter on the crust. Vegan blogger extraordinaire Quarry Girl has all the great details and a rave review of the new menu item.

Masa is located at 1800 W. Sunset Blvd.

LA Flea Marketing Rendering

As we wrote about last May, the LA Flea Market will debut this weekend, on Sunday, July 18 in the Dodger Stadium parking lot, and will take place every third Sunday of the month when there’s not a home Dodger game.

This Sunday is the grand opening and will feature radio personality Rick Dees, who will be holding a Hollywood Yard Sale to benefit the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center. He will be auctioning off celebrity items, one auction at 10:00 am and another at 1:00 pm. Throughout the day, you can expect approximately 400 vendors including live bands, food trucks, and sellers with items like vintage goods, antiques and collectibles, sustainable goods, and other new merchandise.

The LA Times published on Tuesday an interview with organizer Phillip Dane, some notable mentions from the interview include:

  • Food and music: The goal is to have a more upscale version of the Rose Bowl Flea Market by offering some extra amenities to the mix. “Bands aren’t just meant to be background music. Our food court will be unsurpassed with 18 of the most tweeted gourmet food trucks,” he told the LA Times. Committed food truck participants include: Ahn-Joo, Cool Haus, Fishlips, Slice Truck, The Munchie Machine, Mandoline Grill, India Jones, Border Grill, Tropical Shave Ice, Del’s Lemonade, Canter’s Deli, Fresh Fries, Willoughby Road, Komodo, Dosa Truck, Crepe’n Around, Gourmet Genie. See below for the band schedule.
  • Arts and crafts will have a presence: “Quite a few vendors came to us through Etsy. They will have a team block of eight spaces with 22 members.”
  • Homeboy Industries will staff the event: “I put together an application for Homeboys on our website, and we had 50 applications in one day. All I did was ask for their name, phone number and for them to tell us about themselves. Some of the stories were so moving. People wrote, ‘I’ve been out of prison but no one will hire me because I have a record or too many tattoos.’ We went down there last Wednesday for interviews and it was fantastic. These are men and women who really want to work. We are going to hire around 40 people to start. They’ll be trained in the logistics of the event, handle parking, directions and greeting the vendors when they arrive early in the morning. I’m also donating booth space to them so they can exhibit their artworks. There will be a whole Homeboy section where they can sell their merchandise and help keep Homeboy going.”

Last Friday, I posted a sneak peak of all the wonderful goods I picked up at the Echo Park Farmers’ Market, all delicious goodies which I cooked up over the long holiday weekend.

This little Farmers’ Market shopping trip was meant to explore some the vendors and find out how far away (or close) the food at the market was coming from. It also gave me an opportunity to meet with blogger Valentina of the newly published Eastside Food Bites as we explored the sights, smells and tastes of all this great, local food.

While unable to interview all the vendors at the market, I do have some recommendations based on this recent experience as well as from some raving reviews from other Echo Park residents:

John Sweredoski helps customers at the Farmers' Market

Sweredoski Farms: Located in Bell Gardens (more less, about 15 miles from Echo Park) has a lot of herbs, lettuce varieties, really fragrant tomatoes, and other produce. The man behind the counter shown above is John Sweredoski; he is very friendly and knowledgeable about the produce he has available, and is there every week. From there I purchased an enormous zucchini and saucer squash, squash blossoms, potatoes, dill, and lemon basil. Everything is fresh, organic, and delicious.

Free goodies at American Apparel’s Echo Park location this Friday through Sunday. Quantities are limited. I assume Friday is the day to go if you want in. No purchase necessary! Cookbook set to open at 1549 Echo Park Avenue

If you’re like me and don’t always make it to the Echo Park Farmers’ Market on Fridays (generally speaking, Fridays are often spent seeking out happy hour spots), a good alternative to the Market for good grocery shopping is opening up hopefully later this summer in Echo Park.

Located at 1549 Echo Park Avenue, near Chango and Chicken Corner, Cookbook is the creation of Echo Park residents Marta Teegan (author of Homegrown, gardener, trained chef, and teacher) and Robert Stelzner (who has experience working at green grocers in Southern California). Once open, you’ll be able to shop for seasonal fruits, vegetables, kitchen utensils and other basics like milk, butter, eggs, bread, as well as a small selection of prepared foods.

“Not only will we offer delicious ingredients to cook with, but we will also have a great selection of cookbooks to choose from, along with a beautiful selection of fresh cut flowers each day,” says Martha. “Organic herb and vegetable starts will be available each spring and fall. We will further offer a variety of events at cookbook, including classes, readings, and tastings throughout the year.”

Cookbook was offering a limited number of “subscriptions” through the end of last week. Contrary to an LA Magazine article and the LA Times/Daily Dish article today, the subscriptions will not solely fund the day-to-day operations of the store, but will more serve as an “opportunity for friends and neighbors to earn free groceries and to support a green grocer in our community,” she says.

So just to make sure the information is cleared up for anyone who had purchased subscriptions, here’s how it will work:

  • A $250 subscription will earn you a $300 tab at the store
  • A $500 subscription will earn you a $500 tab at the store
  • A $1000 subscription will earn you a $1200 tab at the store

The tabs have not set time limit, but are non-renewable once spent in full. Cookbook will email your balance at the end of each month, and it’s easy to sign up – just email them at info@cookbookla.com

My cats and my Echo Park Farmers' Market Bounty

I met up with super awesome blogger Valentina of the newly published Eastside Food Bites tonight, and toured the Echo Park Farmers’ market for some tasty locally grown foods. As you can tell by the photo of my bounty (cats Niña, left, and Truck, right, couldn’t resist a sniff either), I’m on a vegetable kick. I also picked up an I Luv Echo Park sticker by local artist Bill Rangel at Beauty Box when I got my bangs trimmed recently (which they do for free when you get your hair done there).

Stay tuned for my article about the local foods at the Echo Park Farmers’ market! And check out Eastside Food Bites when you get a chance.

And yes, just in case you’re wondering, that is an enormous zucchini squash longer and fatter than my arm! Can’t wait to cook that one up (I’ll even share how!).
