Xoia Vietnamese restaurant (pronounced soy-yah) opened up last Friday, and we finally got a chance to go check out the new diggs and try out the menu.

Right now, Xoai is having a soft opening – meaning there is a limited menu and cash only (that was a surprise for us – we had to run down to the ATM a couple of blocks away for cash). They don’t serve alcohol yet, but according to Eating LA may apply for a license some day.

Echo Park Now didn’t attend the restaurant’s “community night” on Monday where bloggers and press were treated to sample the soft opening menu, so we ventured out last night and ordered just a couple of dishes on our own. I was feeling under the weather, and with the temperature outside unusually cool lately, I had to warm up with some pho. I ordered the vegetarian Pho Chay with tofu, my dinner date the Pho Tai with rare steak.

The broth is delicious – heavy on the anise flavors and plentiful. At first I didn’t think the broth had enough heat (I like mine spicy and steaming hot), but that was nothing a little sriracha didn’t fix. As mentioned, the vegetarian dish had plenty of broth and plenty of noodles, and while there were only about five chunks of tofu there were a LOT of mushrooms (mini portabello I believe). I’m not a huge fan of mushrooms (flavor good, chewing not so much), so I avoided those as much as I could. Other than that, it was tasty and while I put good dent in the bowl I couldn’t finish the whole thing in one sitting.

Vegetarian Pho

Oh yes, and my dinner partner really liked the Pho Tai.

I don’t eat red meat, but there seemed to be a pretty good balance between poultry, red meat, and vegetarian options. Though the menu doesn’t say, I did ask our server and the spring rolls do come vegetarian as well (on the menu they have pork and shrimp).

Allston Yacht Club held a soft launch of its new Sunday “Unbrunch” menu today, and offered free food from 1-3:00 pm to test out the new menu. The AYC Facebook page announced a few items for tasting, including: “crawfish sandwich, garlic fries, beer-battered onion rings, eggplant and potato tacos, pulled pork tostadas, new house-made daiquiris, and don’t forget we’ve got new craft beers on tap.”

The official launch of the Unbrunch menu starts next weekend on Sunday, June 20th from 3-8:00 pm.

I was excited to see what they had to offer on tap, as before there were just a few bottled beers available. Did you go to the free food event and/or would you go to AYC for Unbrunch?

Ongoing/Weekly Specials

I’m not gonna lie to you guys; I don’t know a damn thing about guitars. But that’s okay because Roland does. Roland is the owner of The Fretted Frog, Echo Park’s newest “alternative acoustic guitar store.”

Roland is a musician/former corporate accountant from Toulouse (southern France), but his story is similar to many Americans’. When the recession hit, he was forced to re-evaluate what he was doing with his life. When his job as a corporate accountant ended, he decided to pursue his other passion: music. He had spent some time in southern California and chose Echo Park as the location for his store because, according to Roland, it has a much more down-to-earth vibe than many other southern California neighborhoods.

Roland runs the store with two other guys, Colin and Aaron. When I stopped by to visit the store the other day, Colin and Roland were seated opposite each other in one of the stores open spaces, jamming. Guitars, banjos, mandolins and ukuleles cover each wall, but every instrument is given a certain amount of space creating the impression that each one is a work of art. Roland has done on this purpose in order to distinguish himself from warehouse-like stores such as Guitar Center. He wants every customer to wander the space, pick up whatever catches their eye, play around with it and, in the end, make their own decision. He’s not a fan of guitar store employees telling customers what to buy.

Again, I don’t know a damn thing about guitars, so if this piques your interest, I suggest stopping in and meeting the guys. Their hours are slightly abbreviated for the next couple of weeks until their grand opening (we’ll let you guys know when). They’re open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. They are located at 1200 N. Alvarado St. (right next to where Sunset meets Alvarado.

The Grill ‘Em All truck frequents Echo Park, so it felt right to post its awesome menu.

Another Mishka L.A. Lunch Truck day this weekend! Sunday, June 6, from 12:00 noon – 4:00 pm.

This is a great opportunity to check out the Mishka store and try those mobile food trucks you never seem to get to. Dosa Truck (Indian sourdough crepes), Mandoline Grill (Vietnamese cuisine), Lomo Arigato (Japanese cuisine), and Coolhaus (ice cream sandwiches!) trucks will be parked outside Mishka.

Mishka L.A. is located at 1547 Echo Park Ave.

One of Echo Park’s vintage and modern clothing boutiques, Haute Olive, is moving downtown to the Fashion District. Their new location will be at 838 S. Spring Street (between 8th and 9th Ave.). Their hours will be Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday from noon to 7:00 pm. No word yet from Amara on why she decided to move, but I’m sure she’ll get a lot more walk-ins in the Fashion District than she would underneath the Glendale/Sunset bridge.

Take a Hike

Photo via Corralitas Red Car Property

We’ve been doing a lot of research recently about the Red Car routes through Echo Park and Silver Lake, and a recent article on the Corralitas Red Car Property website about the Red Car Trail has got us hankering for a hike. Warm up on Corralitas staircase (with its 133 steep steps) or just start out at the end of Corralitas drive and walk right on up the trail. The mile-long corridor will take you all the way to the corner of Fletcher and Riverside.

Click here for a map of the Red Car Trail from the Corralitas Red Car Property website. The trail is clearly visible on Google maps, click here for a look.

The 826LA online store has some new posters for sale. Designed by Amy Martin, the time travel posters are pretty awesome:
