Tonight, the Greater Elysian Echo Park Neighborhood Council (GEPENC) will discuss an application by Echo Park restaurant Señor Fish to add liquor to its existing beer and wine license, as well as to expand its seating to the adjacent building, formerly the tortilleria.

Señor Fish may have opened last May, but it would be difficult to tell if you were just walking by. Though a new sign has been installed on the corner of the roof, the restaurant chain has yet to repair the graffiti-riddled windows. General Manager Jesse Pimentel said in July, in an email, that the windows were to be replaced within a couple of weeks, saying, “The windows will be replaced first. We are also going to put some stools along the counter by the TV and also beautify the interior.”

In an article by The Eastsider LA from late August, the windows were again addressed and the new windows were only a “couple of weeks” away from being repaired:

Ramirez [the restaurant owner] said he has held off  replacing the windows for fear they would get scratched as soon as they get replaced. He said vandals can still scratch or cut their way through the plastic film that has been applied to many windows to protect them against scratches.  Currently, his family is working on a wood screen that would protect the windows at night but roll down and out of the way during the day time and create a wainscoating at the base of the building. If that does not prove practical,  the store will install some other type of metal screen or folding doors. What ever option is selected, expect new windows in a couple of weeks, he said.

Pimentel also mentioned the response to the restaurant opening had been great, but they may not get the community support for a full liquor license and restaurant expansion if the windows aren’t repaired.

The neighborhood council meeting is tonight, Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at 7:00 pm. The Community Center where the meeting will be held is located at 1572 Sunset Boulevard behind the Bank of America.

The meeting agenda also includes discusion of five single family small lot dwellings at 1516 Echo Park Avenue.

Assemblymember Gil Cedillo is coming to Echo Park for his 2011 End of Session Tour tomorrow – Tuesday, September 13, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 pm at El Centro del Pueblo (the first of many in the district he represents).

The community is invited to attend the session to hear from our representative about what’s been accomplished this year, and the goals for the upcoming legislative year. The 45th district he represents covers parts of Atwater Village, Hollywood, Echo Park, Silver Lake, Highland Park, Lincoln Heights, and El Sereno.

To RSVP, contact Fredy Ceja at (323)225-4545 or Fredy.Ceja@asm.ca.gov

El Centro del Pueblo is located at 1157 Lemoyne Street.

I am very much looking forward to the meeting/social/fundraiser/mixer tonight for the Echo Park Improvement Association (as a committee member, I’ve been involved in the organization and this event).

At this particular meeting, the EPIA will have representatives from CD1, CD13, and the Northeast and Rampart Divisions to provide updates on community issues. Oftentimes there will also be input from other community members for event announcements and other comments. In between those agenda items, there will be cocktails, raffles (lots of great stuff from local eateries and businesses), and other goodies. It’s a great way to get involved!

Hope to see you tonight at 7:00 pm at Taix!!

A group of parents, community members, and teachers are throwing an “information party” so people can learn more about the plans for CRES#14, the new school being built on Alvarado and Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park. Members of the design team, teachers and community members will talk about the Echo Park Community Partners Design Team plan.

The Echo Park Moms for Education group is circulating a petition in support of the Echo Park Community Partners Design Team proposal, as opposed to adopting plans from the Camino Nuevo Charter Academy.

Here’s an excerpt from the petition:

We want our community voices heard collectively through this petition because we want this school to be governed by the community. Of the two plans proffered for CRES 14, only the LD4 & Echo Park Community Plan allows for a degree of direct governance of the school by the community. We believe that having decision making power for both parents and community members is essential in both terms of self determination and direct participation.

If you’re interested in discussing this issue with fellow Echo Park community members, regardless of which proposal you are in support of, check it out:

Saturday, February 19 from 10:00 am – 12:00 noon

The Episcopal Cathedral Congregation – St. Paul

Coffee and treats will be served.

Though the developers of the Sunset Flats project didn’t attend last month’s Echo Park Improvement Association Neighborhood Issues Committee meeting as scheduled, they will hopefully be making it up to everyone at tonight’s meeting.

This may be your last chance to hear directly from the developers before the city makes a decision on the project variances on January 13, 2011. Residents who oppose the project will be particularly interested in attending the meeting, although we’ve heard the developer wasn’t so keen on budging at the last meeting with residents and CD13.

Nevertheless, join the EPIA (which, for purposes of full disclosure, I am a member of) tonight:

If you’re curious about what’s going on in Echo Park and the greater area, there’s a GEPENC meeting tonight at 6:30 pm at the Rosemont Avenue Elementary School Auditorium, located at 421 N. Rosemont Avenue.

Why go? Besides being involved in your community, there are some items posted in the agenda that have been of particular interested to the Echo Park community:

  • May be voting on supporting the new Sunset Beer Company’s application for a Conditional Use Permit (CUB) and a Mitigated Negative Declaration (ZA 2010-2048 CUB/ENV-2010-2049 MND). Those permits will allow for on-site sales of wine and beer for their 14-seat tasting room, as well as the sale of beer and wine for off-site consumption.
  • 64-unit complex on Sunset Blvd. and Elsinore: Will review without committee recommendation. If you want to know if there are any updates to this project, this will be the time as the developer has been working with the Neighborhood Council on design plans.
  • Discussion/possible allocation of $2,500.00 dollars to the Echo Park Historical Society for the repair and maintenance of the Jensen’s Recreation Center sign. This is great as the sign has been left unlit for quite a few years now, and the money is coming in from GEPENC as a matching grant.
  • May vote on authorizing a letter to the bidders of CRES #14 (EPN wrote about this issue recently) emphasizing the support of parental and community involvement in the process, and GEPENC’s role in outreach to the community.

You can review the full agenda here.

At tomorrow’s Echo Park Improvement Association (EPIA) Neighborhood Issues Committee meeting, a representative from the LAUSD will attend to discuss the future of CRES#14, a new school being built near Alvarado and Sunset Blvd.

A rep failed to show at the last EPIA meeting, prompting a re-scheduling of the meeting, and tomorrow (Wednesday, October 20), LAUSD administrator Chieko Rupp will be joining the conversation to hear from Echo Park residents about the project.

Residents, parents, and future parents should attend this meeting to learn about CRES#14, and to let the LAUSD know that its plan to make the school a K-8 “Choices” school needs to involve community outreach. Residents at the last EPIA meeting were disappointed to learn of the K-8 plans, worried that yet another elementary school would hurt existing Echo Park elementary schools with already dwindling enrollment.

In addition, it doesn’t sound like the new school will in fact serve the community at large, but will be pulling from other neighborhoods where children will have to travel longer distances for school.

Community members came to a consensus that the school should be a grade 7-8 school, should be open to Echo Park children, and should perhaps focus on a specific purpose, such as arts or language arts.

A little back story to the school site:

  • The two blocks the school is being built was once home to more than 50 houses. Construction started in December 2008.
  • The 875-seat campus, $68 million school was suppose to alleviate overcrowding in neighboring public schools. It’s now common knowledge that enrollment in public schools has been dwindling for quite some time now.
  • The LAUSD lost a long legal battle over the site, but found a way to build anyways.

Even if you don’t have children now, but see yourself living in Echo Park for quite some time, now is your time to get involved!
