It’s been a few months since the Echo Curio closed its doors, but the retail space at Sunset Blvd. and Laveta has yet to get new renters.

It seems the space has been plagued by problems since the LAPD started cracking down on the entertainment venue last year for its unofficial BYOB problems, and then for permitting issues as a performance space (which ended up being the final death-blow). Other food and/or entertainment businesses interested in the space might run into the same issues – there’s no parking (the city has ridiculous parking rules) and it’s not permitted for pretty much anything (other than commercial/office space).

For those brave enough to try and open up this great space in a great location in Echo Park can check out this Craiglist post leasing out the location:

Up for lease is this wonderful store-front commercial space in the heart of Echo Park along Sunset Blvd. This is a very visible space with lots of pedestrian traffic.

The space itself is divided between two rooms. The front room is just under 500 interior sf and the back room, which includes the bathroom is just over 300 interior sf.

This is perfect for retail, commercial, office or studio. It is not currently suitable for food services.

This space is being offered at $1750/month with a 2 year lease (with option to renew). Lease includes one off street parking spot.

Call or email to schedule an appointment for viewing.

Check out the Craigslist post here.

A big “For Lease” sign is just one indication of the Echo Curio’s for-real final days. After being shut down in October by police, citing a lack of entertainment license, the long-time venue is unable to get the necessary permits from the city to continue bringing local musicians to the venue.

Since then, it’s held a few art openings and shows, giving us hope that the space on Sunset and Laveta won’t end up empty. Alas, the Echo Curio indeed coming to an end after closing a current art exhibit by & Collective on December 17, and Echo Obscura Movie Night (movie screenings at the Curio) on Sunday, December 19.

We will miss you, Echo Curio. We’ve seen friends play at the space, along with some really seriously obscure stuff, we’ve colored on your chalk walls, and brown-bagged to our heart’s delight. There probably won’t be another one like you out there, so we are happy to have experienced it while we could!

You may have heard already that pretty soon, the Echo Curio will be closing down for good. The owners posted the following on the Echo Curio blog just a couple of days ago:

Echo Curio has become my life for the past three years… and it has been the life of Justin, Tim and Heather for longer… I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect place to continue their eclectic egalitarian experiment and i couldn’t have imagined the response we got from you kind people.

It is with a heavy heart and a tired soul that I and Justin say good-bye to the long nights, endless emails, constant phone calls, neverending conversations and non-stop tap dancing around egos and feelings… We are now ready to have our days and nights back for awhile and to adjust our approach.

But don’t worry, tonight will be the free opening reception for a new exhibit called “Picture Con Secuencia: A Show of Exquisite Corpses.” The exhibit will go through November 29th.

The opening is free, tonight (Friday, November 12th) and starts at 8:00 pm.

After a few weeks of trying to get a Cafe-Entertainment license in order for the space to host music shows on a regular basis, it looks like the Echo Curio might have run out of luck as an entertainment venue.

According to the Echo Curio blog, after attending orientation meetings and running around the Department of Building and Safety building, owners Grant Capes and Justin McInteer learned that not only is the building zoned for Retail, but the zoning excludes them from getting the necessary Cafe-Entertainment license.

The next step? Major reconstruction on the bathroom in order to qualify for a change in zoning, as well as providing parking spaces for the venue. Or, “we can accept and not do music performances and try to eek by on the art and record sales (which is sadly not going to happen, we blame you, ECONOMY!),” said the owners on their blog post.

With the costs of construction and obvious limitations in providing parking spaces (valet service at the Curio? Doesn’t quite fit), the owners are seriously considering closing the Echo Curio at the end of the year. Anyone interested in partnering with the Echo Curio to host shows, etc. should contact them directly.

In the meantime, check out some art shows and other things happening at the Curio before the doors close:

  • Thursday, October 21 from 8:00 pm – midnight: Geoff Geis’ wonderfully subversive “Obamaporn” art show and think-a-thon.
  • Saturday, October 23 at Human Resources: Exquisite Corpse workshop followed by an all-acoustic show. More info here.
  • Sunday, October 24 at 9:00 pm at F Haus: Green Machine curated smokeathon, Sean McCann, Justin McInteer and Grant Capes, Gui Barra, and more

We don’t want the shows to end at Echo Curio – wish there was something we could do?!

For the week of Monday, October 18 through Sunday, October 24

The Echo Curio is also closed down for the time being, we will update the progress on their permits as soon as we have more info!

The Echo Curio might be shut down for a little while, but tonight they are able to host an art opening for co-owner Justin McInteer. Check it out from 8:00 am – Midnight tonight, refreshments will be served.

The Echo Curio has been a long-time performance and art space, and a great space for local bands to play – we’ve been in the crowd for many of our friend’s performances and are grateful to have a place in Echo Park for great music to happen. But on Friday night (October 1), the LAPD shut down the Echo Curio during a show, even after they complied with the city to cease the BYOB policy last August.

“As you know,” said co-owner Justin Justin McInteer, “we have been a dry space for over 3 months now, so were a little confused as to why the police are spending time shutting down a community art and performance space.” They then learned that this time, the violation seems to be a lack of permits, specifically a Cafe-Entertainment license required for any business with any form of entertainment (including karaoke) on a regular basis.

With several shows coming up, including the Culture Collide fest and full schedules through November with local and touring bands, other nearby spaces are helping redirect shows while the shop is closed through October 18. In the meantime, the Curio owners are doing their research and are even meeting with Eric Garcetti to find out what they should do.

“…hopefully we’ll pass the class and get the info we need together that day and start the process… What would be great to find out is if we can get temporary permission to have shows while this period of waiting for the next step – the inspection and then vote by the commission to (hopefully) approve our license,” a recent post on the website blog says.

Other classes and workshops will continue to be held at the shop, and the art gallery will still be open (an art opening for Justin McInteer will take place either Thursday or Friday). We hope things happen smoothly for the guys at the Echo Curio, and look forward to seeing some great shows soon!

If you’re interested in showing your support for the Echo Curio, tell Eric Garcetti at councilmember.garcetti@lacity.org

Want that green thumb all your Echo Park neighbors seem to have? Now you get a chance to learn how to grow your own vegetables in your very own garden. The Echo Curio will be hosting weekly courses led be Grow LA: Victory Garden Initiative starting this weekend!

Every Sunday in October, the workshop will teach you how to start your own garden for your backyard in containers or at a community garden site.

The initiative brings together local families and neighborhoods to share their experiences, skills and produce. Participants are able to turn this new interest in gardening into successful, productive gardens that will generate positive changes in their homes by helping to lower grocery bills and enhance opportunities to eat healthy food.

Sounds like a great idea! Classes are $20 each, or $70 for all four classes.

When you go out this weekend to see some awesome shows in Echo Park, don’t forget that the Echo Curio is no longer allowing patrons to bring their own booze to the gallery’s shows. Last week the curiousity shop tweeted “changes they are a-coming – ECHO CURIO is going to go dry for the time being… no byob in or out of the shop… sorry for inconvenience.” This week they confirmed the news with a blog post, saying:

We’re now an alcohol-less venue, neither selling nor allowing byob anymore. It is for the greater good, according to the LAPD, so all we can suggest is get your freak on before or after you visit us. Or maybe sneak out in the middle for a quickie… My word!

It seems they were visited by the LAPD on August 9 during a show, and were cited for being a “bottle club.” Co-owner Grant Cape told the LA Times music blog Pop & Hiss: “Funny thing was, we had no one drinking outside, no loud music playing, and maybe five adults drinking inside.” Either way, patrons had to poor out what drinks they did have (for quite a few months now, the Curio hasn’t allowed drinking outside).

So is this the future of venues like Echo Curio, where BYOB or a cooler of Colt 45 will be a critical concern of neighbors and the LAPD? It’s becoming such a common (and expected) part of the “speakeasy” shows in LA, especially in areas like Silver Lake and Echo Park. What once started as an innovative way to bring customers into an art gallery or a record store, now might be a problem. The Echo Curio isn’t as concerned, Cap told the LA Times, “[This] will make it harder to get a crowd, I think, but we’ll see.”

On Saturday, June 17 at the Echo Curio, Echo Park resident and folk musician Claire Cronin, along with folk musician Queen Victoria, will be opening for Omaha singer/songwriter Simon Joyner.

Joyner is kicking off his “Living Rooms and Discrete Spaces” tour at the show, focusing on his record Out Into the Snow, a “collection of ramshackle folk-rockers and gorgeous narratives released in 2009 on Team Love.” Simon will be playing as a trio, with pedal steel and keyboards and will be taking requests.

Show starts at 9:00 pm. Capacity is limited at the Echo Curio and is BYOB.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance by clicking here.

The Echo Curio is located at 1519 W Sunset Blvd.
