Update: The opening has been pushed back, probably to Monday. Thanks to Quarry Girl for the heads up!
As we reported last week, Mooi is set to open today with its creative raw-vegan menu featuring: juices, dessert and gourmet coffee at the ice cream bar, as well as a limited menu of breakfast and lunch items.
The winner of the vegan ice cream contest put on by Quarry Girl came up with the flavor called Cracker Jack: salted caramel ice cream with peanut butter swirl. The new item should be on Mooi’s new menu.
I went to the pre-opening party on Monday to sample the menu, but the event was incredibly crowded and it was difficult to get in on the food tray action. Of the three items I managed to try after hanging out by the prep area, I enjoyed two. The raw “sushi” item was really not my favorite (the nori just tasted overwhelmingly like a vitamin supplement), while the sweet and spicy flavor of the jalapeno pepper with some sort of vegan cheese filling was delicious. I was looking forward to trying some of the well-reviewed desserts, but didn’t see any come out of the prep area. That said, I’m willing to give Mooi another shot after it opens to the public.
Mooi is located on the corner of Sunset and Logan.
Hours are: Breakfast and Lunch Monday-Saturday, 8:00 am to 3:00 pm; Dinner fare Wednesday-Saturday, 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm; and Brunch on Sunday, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.
The L.A. Flea Market is coming to Dodger Stadium on July 18, 2010, and will take place every third Sunday of the month when there’s not a Dodger game.
A few community members had expressed concern over yet more street traffic throughout the neighborhood. Noel Pallais sent out a community-wide notification at the end of April, and wrote about how the flea market is to be handled:

Your summer kickoff event this year might just have to include some bacon – most likely because the smell of bacon-wrapped hot dogs will lure you to Echo Park Lake in just a couple of weekends.
Yelper Javier J. is well known for hosting such bacon-wrapped hot dog events, one at the Echo Park Lake last year, and another at Griffith Park earlier this year. This next Bacon-Wrapped Hot Dog Fest will take place on the North side of the lake on Saturday, May 22, 2010 starting at 12:00 noon.
This is also where vegetarians and meat-eaters unite; included on previous menus are veggie dogs with veggie bacon (see photo above). Last March, the Spring kick-off at Griffith Park included a variety of flavors and dogs, including: veggie dogs with veggie bacon, turkey dogs with turkey bacon, bacon vodka, onions and peppers (of course!), Wasabi mayo, seaweed strips, yakisobe, banh mi fixings, french baguettes, and more. This event’s menu isn’t settled yet, but will include a variety of delicious fixins.
No entrance fee, just a donation of a buck or two for each hot dog you devour.

On Mooi’s Facebook page yesterday, they announced the new Echo Park space on Logan and Sunset had passed its final health inspection, and is slated to open soon. Eater LA is also reporting today the raw-vegan restaurant opening is scheduled for Thursday, May 20. We’ll post the restaurant and catering menu once it’s released.
The raw-vegan restaurant concept includes organic food, and, whenever possible, locally grown. They don’t use any animal protein or dairy products, soy, wheat, or gluten. They never deyhdrate anything over 118 degrees, “therefore preserving all of their natural nutriets and enzymes which allows us to bring you not only the best tasting but the healthiest and most nutritional food that we can.”
Quarry Girl is also holding a contest where you create your own ice cream flavor that will appear on the Mooi menu (and you get some free ice cream!). All you have to do is come up with the concept and a name, submit your information, and live in L.A. by Saturday, May 15. Click here for all the information.

CitySip is hosting a class slash tasting on home beer brewing on Saturday, May 15.
The cost of the class is $45, which gets you the home brewing lessons, beer trivia and tasting, and pizza.
It’s going down in the super secret employee parking lot behind CitySip LA. We’ll be brewing beer, tasting beer, talking about beer, and eating Two Boots pizza! Expect to taste about 6-8 commercial beers… and there might be some extras “not included in the price.”
We’ll be starting out with a pretty basic extract brew this time, so you’ll learn all you need to know to get started making your own!
The class takes place from 1:00 pm – 4:00pm, and they advise that you wear clothes that can get dirty or wet.
To make a reservation, call City Sip at (213) 483-9463 or email for your spot.
CitySip is located at 2150 W. Sunset Blvd, click here for the website.
