Chicks with Knives, which holds supper club events across Southern California, will be hosting its next supper club in Echo Park on Sunday, April 11. We’re new to Chicks with Knives and the supper club phenomenon, but it sounds incredibly delicious! The company hosts private dinner parties and other food events for what is sort of a social organization that includes dinner (so it’s like an underground restaurant at a private residence, for members only). Every event features food made from “sustainable, organic, local and ethical ingredients.”

A total of 16 spots are available for members. For membership consideration, you can check out their website here.

Price is $64 per person

If you want to bring Chicks with Knives back to Echo Park this year, they are also looking for homes in July and August for upcoming events.

Today (Monday, April 5), Echo Park’s newest salon is opening its doors. Rock Paper Salon will be offering hair cutting and coloring services in what looks to be a very elegant atmosphere. The salon’s basic offerings include cuts for men starting at $40 and cuts for women starting at $60. A little more about their hair philosophy:

We just want to make you look good and walk out happy. We know what is in style but aren’t trying to make you look like a hot topic catalog model, or some band that is so hot on pitchfork.com right now. No matter what your age or taste is we can point you in the right direction with your look.

Nice. Also, they have a community bookshelf from which you can borrow a book if you bring in one that you’re finished with. No word on their exact hours yet, but you can give them a call at 213-250-0900 or go here to make an appointment online. The store is located at 1515 W. Sunset Blvd.

The other day, I woke up late, jumped in my car and drove down Sunset intent on finding myself some good eats. I was at Sunset and Micheltorena when what to my wandering eye should appear but the Patty Wagon! They are the newest addition to Los Angeles’ fleet of food trucks offering mini burgers made from grass-fed beef. So, I got behind the truck and followed it all the way to the Trader Joe’s in Silverlake.

I decided to get the “You’re My Everything” (sweet peppers, onions, garlic and swiss cheese) with a side of rosemary and garlic fries. I never knew how much tastier grass-fed beef is than regular beef. It actually tastes like meat! The patty was perfectly cooked and juicy without being greasy. And the toppings all complimented each other and the meat perfectly. The one thing that I failed to realize is that these are mini burgers, so I probably should have ordered more than one.

The unfortunate thing is that the Patty Wagon’s current list of locations doesn’t include Echo Park, so I think we need to encourage them to come to our neighborhood. Maybe they and Grill ‘Em All could have a grill-off!

Once Aisling Walsh gets some paint on the walls of her store and puts a sign up, she’s going to call it Caban (her business partner’s last name). But the lack of interior design isn’t stopping her from keeping her doors open every day from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm in case anyone would like to stop in and browse her treasures.

And she does, in fact, sell treasures. There was one piece that caught my eye as soon as I walked in: a hefty, old leather chair with dials on the arm rests. She sat me down in it and turned the dials and it began to vibrate. An early version of a “massaging chair” from the 40’s. Awesome. These are the types of items that Walsh spends all of her free time hunting down: unique vintage and second-hand furniture, vinyl, clothes and costume jewelry.

Helping her out is Javier Flores, who will be re-upholstering Walsh’s furniture-finds. He is also creating clothes that are simple in design but feature funky patterns and textures. Each piece is one-of-a-kind but will be priced somewhere between $20 and $30 each. Walsh wants to offer items that are unique and beautiful but accessible and priced for the average Echo Park resident. And she wants to revive the east side of Echo Park while she’s at it. Join the movement and go check her stuff out at 1218 W. Sunset (Sunset and Marion).

One of my favorite new stores/spaces in Echo Park is one of my neighbors, The Echo Country Outpost. Aside from scheduling monthly art exhibitions and weekly/monthly music nights, they stock their store with new and vintage curiosities that speak to the appreciators of handmade quality and out-of-the-ordinary gift giving opportunities. The store is arranged with the care and attention to detail of a finely curated historical or natural history museum, and each piece has a unique story. On a recent visit, I inquired as to the stories behind a few pieces.

1) Employee Picks – Favorite Book/Publication:
The Satanists: Devil worship as chilling as Rosemary’s Baby.
Salty Sayings: He who goes with wolves will learn to howl.
Peyote: A compelling study of the sacramental use of the Native American hallucinogen.
The Legends and Myths of Hawaii – The Fables & Folklore of a Strange People: A book of Hawaiian mythology & legends. Written by Hawaiian King David Kalakaua.

The Park Restaurant is a favorite of mine and I usually make it there at least once a week. Everything I’ve had is delicious and you can’t ask for better and/or friendlier service. Here’s a beautiful example of their Fried Egg Sandwich, yum. Pair it with a Hitachino White Ale and you’ll in wake up late and make the best of the rest of your weekend heaven.

My only comment/suggestion for The Park is this: Bring back the Country Fried Portabello! I had this for brunch last year, around August… WOW. It’s so good, you don’t have to be a vegan or veggie to appreciate it. But for those of you who are, it will take care of any cravings you have for this normally meaty style meal.

It might be a Wednesday night, but that shouldn’t keep you from gettin’ your green on for Saint Patrick’s Day in Echo Park. Here’s your Saint Patty’s Day guide for Wednesday, March 17:

  • AYC: The guys have been curing their own big batch of brisket to make their special corned beef sandwiches – last year they sold out of them by evening. There will also be Irish whiskey cocktails plus $4 Guinness all day (they open at NOON!). And, since it’s Wednesday, that means $5 Wicked Wednesdays will still be effect starting at 5:30 p.m.

Readers, you will be proud to know that I ingested one too many caffeine and guarana infused vodka drinks on Friday night all in the name of bringing you in the inside scoop on the Echo Park Independent Co-op. You’re welcome. Of course, I didn’t do it alone. Kelly and Faith and I all put on our Friday night best and headed down to the swanky affair that was their grand opening.

The Echo Park Independent Co-op (E.P.I.C.) is the creation of Tristen Scott and Rhianon Jones. It’s located in a big beautiful space on Sunset within the confines of the Jensen Recreational Center Building. The interior design of the store is stunning. Very grand and elegant but simple enough in it’s decoration to let the artwork and the clothing really stand out. Admittedly, it is their goal to present everything in the store in “a gallery-like setting.”

Half of the store is dedicated to one-of-a-kind clothing pieces created by L.A.-based designers. I’m not going to lie about the prices. They range from $60 to $1,000 and on average are somewhere between $100 and $300.  When I asked Tristen about this, he admitted that this was not affordable to most people. His goal is not to provide cheap, ready-to-wear fashion to everyone but to support local artists many of whom have no other venue in which to display their work. They also eventually plan on “taking artists and designers under their wing to create in-store products that are unique to the market place.”

The other half of the store is to be used as a gallery space. On Friday there was Post-It Note art on display created by a variety of artists and friends. Each display was priced at $10 and all of the proceeds went to Million Trees L.A. In addition, 10% of all the proceeds from Friday night’s sales went to the same organization.

The Echo Park Independent Co-op is located at 1712 Sunset. Their website (http://www.shopepicla.com/) is not fully-functional yet, but we’ll be sure to let you guys know when it is.

Due to many Angelenos heading to Austin this week for the SXSW festival, Origami Vinyl has changed their hours this week. The owners are heading to the festival but their friends will be helping out so the store doesn’t have to close completely for the week.

Tue – Wed: Noon til 7pm
