Okay it’s not Echo Park… but we likes it

It’s true… we occasionally cross the Echo Park borders to check out some cheap eats. This is one such occasion. Starting this weekend, Flore Cafe in Silverlake is hosting a couple of “All-you-can-eat” special days. Going on for three days, from Saturday, September 26 through Monday, September 28, the cafe will be serving all-you-can-eat vegan tostadas, brunch, and “turkey” dinner for $10 per person for each event.

Echo Park “Rehabilitation” Project Walking Tour

The City of Los Angeles Proposition O Citizens Oversight Advisory Committee (COAC), representatives from the Bureaus of Engineering and Sanitation, partners from the Department of Recreation and Parks, and design consultants Black & Veatch, will be conducting a walking tour of the Echo Park Lake Rehabilitation project on Tuesday, September 29th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

At 1:00 p.m., there will be a public meeting at the Echo Park Recreation Center.

3rd Annual “Seize the Sizzle Salsa Contest”

The Echo Park Farmers’ Market is holding its annual “Seize the Sizzle Salsa Contest” on Friday, September 25, 2009, judging from 6:00–7:00 pm. This is the third year the competition between local shoppers and vendors to create the best salsa has taken place.

The EP Farmer’s market, operated by Sustainable Economic Enterprises of Los Angeles (SEE-LA), takes place in parking lot #663, 1142 Logan St., half a block south of Sunset Blvd. It held every Friday from 3:00-7:00 pm, and is sponsored by the Greater Echo Park and Elysian Neighborhood Council (GEPENC) and Council President Eric Garcetti of Council District 13.

According to the press release, provided by the Echo Park Farmer’s Market, anyone can enter the contest for free. “Enrollment is limited to the first 30 contestants. All contestants are encouraged to use ingredients bought fresh from the market for their homemade salsa.” Winners will receive gift certificates from local restaurants.

GEPENC meeting tonight will focus on ACP

Mr. Larry Bezark, ACP Task Force Co-Chair from the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Integrated Pest Control Branch will present information on the Asian Citrus Psyllid (ACP) and will be answering questions by community members.

Everyone is welcomed to attend and ask any questions you may have about the current efforts to eradicate this pest.

Via email, Bradley of the Northeast Community Police Advisory Board (NOE CPAB) notified the community of several gang arrests that occurred this morning at around 4:00 am in the Glassell Park, Cypress Park, and Echo-Elysian Park communities and surrounding areas. The notification continues as follows:

“This morning at 0400, your Finest the Northeast Los Angeles Police Department participated in a coordinated effort to arrest and detain Gang Members and those harboring criminals in the Glassell Park, Cypress Park, and Echo-Elysian Park Communities including surrounding areas. Several arrest were made with controlled raids on properties that housed Gang Members with the LAPD seizing weapons, narcotics, and other gang paraphernalia though-out the Northeast/Central Areas. Any/all tools available to the LAPD coupled with the Gang Injunctions were employed to assist in the arrest of Gang Members and wanted criminals in our communities Unfortunately, Northeast CPAB Members have been given very little information to disseminate to concerned Residents in the affect areas.”

There will be a community meeting tonight held by Council Representatives, LAUSD, and the NOE LAPD at Washington-Irving Middle School (3010 Estara Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90065-2205) from 6pm-8pm to address any concerns. “The LAPD, City Attorney’s Office, and other local agencies that assisted in the coordinated efforts, will be able to provide you with updates and arrest numbers with commentary from Captain William Murphy and Brass on steps to take to help improve your Neighborhood,” the email details.

Park[ing] Day LA in Echo Park

Par[ing] Day LA takes place today across the city, transforming metered parking spots into “temporary public parks.” The event wraps up in Echo Park from 7:00pm – 11:00pm at Logan Street and Park Avenue near the lake. They will be screening Contested Streets, Alley Cats, and the Triplets of Belleville.

Our guests will discuss ink and pixels, pigments and politics, and how the love of comics mixes with the sticky waters of the business. Panelists will also answer your thought and question bubbles.

Our panelists:

Lalo Alcaraz, is a Los Angeles-based cartoonist and creator of the first nationally syndicated Latino-themed political daily comic strip, “La Cucaracha.” Lalo drew editorial cartoons for the L.A. Weekly from 1992-2009. Lalo illustrated Latino USA: A Cartoon History (text by Ilan Stavans) and produced the book La Cucaracha, La Cucaracha, the first collection from his daily comic strip, and Migra Mouse, a collection of his editorial cartoons on immigration. He is also a screenwriter and a popular speaker on the college circuit. His award winning artwork has appeared across the US and the planet. Lalo also hosts the popular radio program, “The Pocho Hour of Power”, Fridays at 4pm on KPFK 90.7 FM.

Jaime Hernandez is the co-creator of the beloved Love and Rockets series, one of the pioneering alternative comics of the 1980s. Love and Rockets, initially a self published single comic, was picked up by Fantagraphics Books and produced 50 issues before the series went dormant in 1996. In 2001, the run was revived as Love and Rockets Volume 2. In the interim, Jaime’s solo projects included Whoa, Nellie!, Penny Century and Maggie and Hopey Color Fun. Jaime has also worked for The New Yorker, Spin, Hustler, and has done album covers for Michelle Shocked, 7 Year Bitch, The Indigo Girls and Los Lobos. In 2006, he produced a 20 part strip in The New York Times Magazine titled La Maggie La Loca. Jaime was born in Oxnard California and now lives in Pasadena with his wife and daughter.

Keith Knight is a cartoonist, rapper, and media activist. His two weekly comic strips, the K Chronicles and (th)ink appear in various publications throughout the nation and have been collected into six books. His art has appeared in Salon.com, ESPN the Magazine, L.A Weekly, MAD Magazine, the Funny Times, and World War 3 Illustrated. Keith is the recipient of the 2006 & 2007 Glyph Awards for Best Comic Strip and three of his comix were the basis of an award-winning live-action short film, Jetzt Kommt Ein Karton, in Germany. His comic art has appeared in museums and galleries from San Francisco (CA) to Angoulême (France).

Marv Wolfman is a forty-year veteran in the field of comic book writing. After lengthy runs working for Marvel Comics in the 1970s on such titles as Amazing Spiderman and Dr. Strange (and creating the character ofNova), Wolfman moved to competitor DC Comics where he has mostly remained since. There, with penciller George Perez, Wolfman co-created The New Teen Titans, which has seen life beyond the comics page as a Cartoon Network series and whose characters have appeared in the television program Smallville. Also with Perez, Wolfman is responsible for the groundbreaking mini-series Crisis on Infinite Earths. He has won numerous awards for his writing and helped pioneer the receiving of writing credits for for-hire work.

Moderator: Salvador Plascencia was born in Guadalajara, Mexico and raised in El Monte, California. His debut novel, The People of Paper, was named a best book of the year by San Francisco Chronicle and The Los Angeles Times and has been translated into ten languages. He is the recipient of the Bard Fiction Prize and the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for new Americans. Salvador is a Visiting Professor at UC Davis.

Auto Accident off the 5 Freeway and Stadium Way

Driving home from work this evening, at around 5:45 pm, I noticed this car accident at the 5 freeway off Stadium way and Landa Street. A car was completely flipped over, and rescue workers were on the scene. The 5 South offramp is completely blocked, so make plans to get off earlier (there’s no Dodger game tonight). Hope everyone’s okay!

This Saturday, September 19 starting at 9:30 am the Citizens Committee to save Elysian Park will be hosting a cleanup and hike through the western edge of Elysian Park. Explore and discover new trails through the park while helping to keep the neighborhood a beautiful place to live!

Anti-Graffiti Website Launched

The LAPD has just announced the launch of the city’s new Anti Graffiti website, http://anti-graffiti.lacity.org, created by The Office of Community Beautification, Board of Public Works.

The email sent out today provided the wrong website address, so make sure to go to the correct address provided here.

The site is meant for residents requesting graffiti removal from public and private property. The email that went out today from the LAPD notes, “Structures not included in this service are schools (maintained by LAUSD), freeways (maintained by CalTrans), and parks (maintained by Recreation and Parks).”

It also states that most requests will be serviced within 72 hours.

Police activity last night in Echo Park

Last night a police helicopter flew low around Echo Park with spotlights shining around Echo Park Avenue and Morton. Police cars blocked off Scott Avenue at Laveta Terrace, and Parmer Avenue for about 20 minutes.

According to a post on the Echo Elysian Neighborhood Councils Forum, the police were searching for a man reported running through backyards.
