From an LAist article published today, titled: Watch Out Drunk Hipsters, Echo Park Might Get a Security Detail
A proposal to create a Business Improvement District (BID) in Echo Park heads to a City Council committee (.pdf) this afternoon. Submitted by Councilman Eric Garcetti in January, it “would serve the local business community by providing increased security, homeless services, beautification, and streetscape maintenance. Establishment of the BID is expected to revitalize the local economy and is a positive step towards neighborhood renewal.” Not everyone is on board, though. The Eastsider LA spoke to one business owner that was not too happy. “I can’t stand the idea of rent-a-cops harassing our street vendors, our homeless, our cholos and our drunk hipsters. It’s just not needed,” the owner said.
It’s probably not the “drunk hipsters” who have to worry – what do you think of “increased security” in light of the Echo Park Lake swap meet issues?
As it is probably common knowledge in Echo Park that this vacant Pioneer Chicken location on Echo Park Avenue is becoming a Little Ceasars as we speak. I walk by this sign every day, and in some nerdy and random way, I will miss this sign if the new owners tear it down. To the future…
The Greater Echo Park Elysian Neighborhood Action Coalition is proud to announce that 20 of the 20 candidates that were members of the coalition were elected by the neighborhood. The election took place on Saturday, March 20th as part of the Region F sets of neighborhood council elections conducted by the City Clerk.

Here is a little helpful information for any residents looking for a cell phone carrier or thinking about switching. CNET has launched a beta version of a program to compare cell phone coverage in specific areas. The info was collected using real consumer model wireless handsets in the field. The information was geo-tagged and sent to special servers for analysis. (Keep in mind service is subject to change). You can also compare data coverage and see a map depicting dead zones. When I typed 90026 into the zip code field it came up with the following results for signal strength.
The Park Restaurant is a favorite of mine and I usually make it there at least once a week. Everything I’ve had is delicious and you can’t ask for better and/or friendlier service. Here’s a beautiful example of their Fried Egg Sandwich, yum. Pair it with a Hitachino White Ale and you’ll in wake up late and make the best of the rest of your weekend heaven.
My only comment/suggestion for The Park is this: Bring back the Country Fried Portabello! I had this for brunch last year, around August… WOW. It’s so good, you don’t have to be a vegan or veggie to appreciate it. But for those of you who are, it will take care of any cravings you have for this normally meaty style meal.

Sunday is family day at the Lake and it’s no different in the bird world. Being a night owl and working days, weekends are the only times I get the chance to stop by the Lake and take in all that’s going on. But what I’ve been hearing from those who have the determination to make it down there for early a.m. walks is that there are some sights to been seen… these are the hours that the birds run the lake.
This week we would like to welcome Dale Dreiling as Echo Park Now’s first guest blogger. I couldn’t say it better myself so I shall quote from Dale’s website. Dale “is a visual artist whose life and work reflect the unique spirit of the coastal west. Raised in Ventura, California, he received a BFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2001. His work has been exhibited in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Detroit, Portland, Seattle, Oakland & Nakano, Japan. He has designed & illustrated for Converse, Urban Outfitters, Upper Playground, LA Record, HIT+RUN, FunNotFame, Saiko Headwear, Bee House Records & the LA Beat Swap Meet.” Dale is also a resident of Echo Park so we have asked him to come on board this week to share some musings on the neighborhood. He has his own blog here where you can learn more about his art and his life. You can see some of Dale’s paintings at Chango coffee shop through April 4th. Chango is located at 1559 Echo Park Ave.

For those of you who are interested in learning a little bit about Echo Park’s history, the Echo Park Film Center will be presenting Hooray for Edendale! this Saturday, March 20 at 8:00 pm. The film is a documentary that tells the story of Echo Park at the beginning of the 20th century and the film studios that helped to create Los Angeles’s film industry.
A celebration of the birth and early growth of the movie industry in Los Angeles that happened right here in our neighborhood! Award-winning film editor, writer and film industry historian Robert S. Birchard presents over 100 images and some early films exploring the Selig, Keystone/Bison, Pathe, Mixville and Norbig studios that constituted L.A.’s first “Studio Row” in the 1910’s.
The screening is FREE and open to everyone. The Echo Park Film Center is located at 1200 N. Alvarado St.
Where we’re going, we don’t need roads…
As part of Obscura Day (a day of exploring hidden places in cities across the world), The Time Travel Mart will be hosting a tour of several of Los Angeles’ more obscure and hidden locations. The bus takes off from the Time Travel Mart (1714 W. Sunset) this Saturday, March 20 promptly at noon. Tickets are $30 (you pay when you get there), and a bagged lunch will be included.
More juicy details:
The Echo Park Time Travel Mart and Atlas Obscura are teaming up to lead a special bus tour of some of Los Angeles’ most time-specific places. We will travel back to the days of cane sugar sodas, panoramic paintings, and whimsical marionette performances.
John Nese, soda afficionado and owner of Galco’s Soda Pop Stop, will share some of his favorite bubbly beverages of yesteryear. Box lunches will be provided at Griffith Park’s Old Zoo, where we will picnic among the spirits of the apes and climb into abandoned animal cages from the 1930s.
Travel from one extreme locale to another at the Velaslavasay Panorama, where we will trek into a 360-degree display of the arctic north and explore a carnivorous plant garden. Finally, witness a puppetry performance and backroom tour of Bob Baker’s Marionette Theater, the longest-running of its kind in North America.
