An acoustic guitar store will be filling the now empty space adjoining the Echo Park Film Center in the near future. Called The Fretted Frog, the shop will be specializing in alternative, unique and customized acoustic guitars. According to the website, they will also offer:
- A repair shop with a large accessories and piece parts selection
- 3 recording rooms that will be available for instructions and private sessions
- A team of instructors for all styles and all levels
- A stage for open mics, concerts, clinics
No word yet on the exact opening, but the website ancounces they’ll be opening soon.
The Fretted Frog will soon be at 1200 N. Alvarado.

Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, djs spinning records and on and on.”

AYC's Grilled Cheese Sampler
Guanabana with gin
Last Tuesday night was Allston Yacht Club’s first Grilled Cheese Night in honor of National Grilled Cheese Month, and we think they’ve got the right idea serving up a four grilled cheese sampler to gear up for the Grilled Cheese Invitational on April 24.
The happy hour drink of the evening was called something along the lines of a fruity gin concoction, consisting of guanabana nectar, gin and lime with a campari float. It was a really refreshing drink after walking around Echo Park earlier in the evening.
As far as the sampler went, I wasn’t surprised that it was delicious (most of the menu items at AYC are well-prepared). The samplers went like this: White cheddar cheese with green chili pepper, goat cheese with basil pesto, Swiss cheese with balsamic roasted onions, and feta cheese with olive tapenade and roma tomatoes, all served on a soft, buttery french baguette. My favorite was the feta with tapenade, and I was most surprised by the cheddar with green chili peppers (I don’t normally enjoy green chili peppers, but the balance between cheese and chili was just right). Overall, the experience was delightful, and the service excellent as always.
Don’t miss out – the next Grilled Cheese Night is on Tuesday, April 20. They’ve also revived some new happy hour specials: from 5:30 – 7:00 pm, house wine, imported beers and selected cocktails are $4, and four rotating snack selections for $4 each.

AYC Grilled Cheese
In celebration of National Grilled Cheese Month, Allston Yacht Club will be hosting two Grilled Cheese Nights this month on Tuesday, April 13 and Tuesday, April 20. The restaurant will be serving a sampling of four different grilled cheese sandwiches for just $10. I’ll be headed over tonight for the first Grilled Cheese Night, and will be sure to let you know how it goes!
Also, Chef Mike D. will be creating a different grilled cheese sandwich every week—that’s 52 different grilled cheeses per year. The last grilled cheese sandwich I tried at AYC included an olive tapenade which, despite my date’s initial reservations, was incredibly delicious.
Allston Yacht Club will also be participating in the upcoming Grilled Cheese Invitational in Los Angeles on April 24, where some 300 competitors will vie for bragging rights for who makes the BEST grilled cheese sandwich. An estimated 8,000 grilled cheese fanatics are expected to attend.

A press release yesterday unveiled Dodger Stadium’s new menu items you’ll be able to get all season, starting with the home opener on Tuesday, April 13. Some of the new items are enormous in size, and another even has a Facebook page calling for its return.

Menu highlights include:
- My Town Nights: features ethnic foods that represent the diversity of “Dodgertown,” such as Pabellon Criollo for a Venezuela night on May 23, and Spicy Korean-style BBQ chicken and kimchee for Korea night on August 18. There are more than 40 dates this season for My Town, so click here for a list of menu items.
- The Victory Knot: This all-American gigantic snack first caught our eye on a related article published on LAist (see photo), and is supposed to be enough for FOUR people. Two pounds of dough, topped with sea salt, and three dipping sauces (chipotle honey mustard, sweet cinnamon crème, and beer cheese) accompany the monstrosity, which you can only buy at Campy’s Corner on the Field Level. No word on how much this puppy will set you back ($20 plus gym membership maybe?), be sure to let us know if you have some field tickets.
- The Spicy Picante Dog: a somewhat popular Facebook fan page (with 58 members) may have something to do with the return of this Dodger favorite, which had disappeared from the menu last season.
- The usual California Pizza Kitchen, Dippin’ Dots, and all the other tempting treats will be available on the Field and Reserve levels.
- Kaiser Permanente Healthy Plate Carts will also be there to offer healthier alternatives like salads and fruit plates.
- Bleacher Beach will now be open Friday through Sunday.
- Mannywood will now have “five t-shirt options.”
- All-You-Can-Eat Pavilion price will decrease $5 if you purchase tickets in advance.

Warwick, an Echo Park vintage store, has moved from its location at 1461 ½ W Sunset Blvd to a larger space at 1205 Sunset Blvd.
Tomorrow (Saturday, April 10) the store is holding a sort-of grand opening called “Flash Flea” in which local vendors will be featured. There will be a DJ, merchandise for sale, and good company, so check it out from 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm. View the Facebook invitation here.
Have you eaten at Nuvia’s Pupuseria lately? Have you EVER eaten there? You should. They offer some very tasty homemade Mexican and Salvadorean food on the cheap. I went there the other day and got two delicious bean and cheese pupusas and some fried plantains. We were served by Maria who was a gas: “If you need anything, you just yell at me. Say, ‘Mariaaaa!'” They must have JUST re-decorated the interior because you could still smell the drying paint. There wasn’t anything wrong with their decor before, but the new color scheme makes the restaurant feel… cooler. Literally, cooler. It will be a welcome, dark, air-conditioned oasis in the coming summer months. I’ve also heard that they offer really stellar breakfast at a good price, so I’ll have to check that out.
Nuvia’s Restaurant and Pupuseria is located at 1525 W. Sunset Blvd. They’re open seven days a week from 7:30 am to 12:00 am!
