Hot Hot Heat All June

Hot Hot Heat releases it’s new album, Future Breeds, via Dangerbird Records on June 8th. Los Angeles fans can hear the new sounds early, as the band will be doing a June residency every Wednesday night at Bootleg Theater.

Hailing from British Columbia, Hot Hot Heat first came to prominence in 2002 with their breakthrough debut LP, Make Up The Breakdown, an electrifying dose of urgent, dancey rock anchored by frontman Steve Bays’ characteristic yelp and highly infectious melodies. Over the years, the Canadian band has delivered their kinetic brand of rock and roll live to thousands, toured the world with bands such as Modest Mouse, Kings Of Leon, The Walkmen and Queens of the Stone Age, and released several albums, garnering praise from everyone from Pitchfork to Rolling Stone and Spin who described their sound as “aggressively exuberant funk-punk.” Listen to Hot Hot Heat on myspace.

Join the Forces with the Park Advisory Board

Looking for a way to give back to community?

The Echo Park Advisory Board (PAB) is a volunteer group that oversees issues and events at Echo Park Lake and the Recreation Center, including the annual Easter Spring Event, Breakfast with Santa, and Halloween events. The Board is an important component in supporting the center and the community by volunteering for special events, facilitating scholarship fund-raisers, providing feedback and ideas to meet community needs in the area of recreation, and assisting in the publicity and communication of programs and activities.

The Board is currently accepting applications from Echo Park residents, business owners, or volunteers to serve on the board for the following positions: Board Secretary, Teen Representative and three Advisory Committee Leader positions. Starting July 1st, 2010, Board Chairperson and Vice Chairperson will also be open seats.

Interested in applying for a seat on the board? Email to have an application mailed to you, or stop by the Rec Center during operational hours to pick one up.

If you can’t donate your time on the board, how about just a small amount of cash? A little bit can go a long way. Individuals and businesses can help by sponsoring youth teams and clubs through the Rec Center. All donations contribute to the sports scholarships (a $50 scholarship will really help out a league, but partial scholarships are also accepted) as well as summer camp.

You can contact Cassandra Reyes to sponsor or donate to a league, or to inquire about joining the Park Advisory Board.

Meetings are held on the 4th Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm (check our calendar for updates) and are open to the public.

The Rec Center is open from 9:00 am – 8:30 pm Monday-Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm Saturday, and 10:00 am – 3:00 pm on Sunday. The facility is located at 1632 Bellevue Avenue, phone number is (213) 250-3578.

Open House for Summer Drummer Program

As we posted last month, Bedrock in Echo Park is offering basic drumming classes for kids age 8 to 16 this summer. Presented in association with Dixon Drums, the two-week course is led by studio/live drummer John Montgomery and Jacob Dillon, and takes place  from July 12-24, 2010. There is a morning group (9:00 am – 1:00 pm) and an afternoon group (1:30 – 5:30 pm).

At the end of the course, there’s a graduation concert for friends and family where students get to play live with a band. The classes themselves are not free ($800, all-inclusive), but a limited number of scholarships are available courtesy of the Los Angeles Performing Arts Foundation. There are still spots available as of the publishing of this post.

UPDATE: On the second day of the program, drummer Denny Seiwell (drummer in Wings) will give a private clinic for the group sponsored by DW Drums.

Open House Part Deux Scheduled:

Bedrock had an open house at the end of April, and due to its success is having another one on Saturday, May 29th, 2010 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm for those interested in the summer session to meet the staff, play drums, and take part in a demonstration. Kids will get some free stuff like t-shirts, snacks and drinks. It’s free, and you don’t have to make a reservation.

“The one we did in April was a lot of fun,” said Adam Aaronson from Bedrock. “It was truly amazing to watch kids shyly shuffle in and within minutes be jamming out a beat.  There were even a few jam sessions with teachers and students.”

Northeast Crime Update

Here’s your Northeast Division Neighborhood Crime Update from Captain Bill Murphy:

Echo Park
We have a burglary trend in this neighborhood between noon to 6 PM. We have detained and/or arrested some suspects over the past week Some of these crimes maybe committed by juveniles and we have tremendously increased truant enforcement in the neighborhoods of Echo Park and Silverlake. One resident attempted to detain a subject (juvenile suspect) and unfortunately, he broke away and took off (please be careful about taking action into your own hands – your life is not worth taking this risk over). We did get a composite of this subject and put it out to all of our police officers.

Note: We did have an incident that occurred yesterday in East Hollywood (will not be in these crime statistics and the suspect is probably not involved in any Echo Park or Silverlake burglaries – but its an amusing story.)

Yesterday a lady came home and when she pulled into her driveway she noticed that her garage door was open and that a man was inside her garage rummaging through her other vehicle parked in the garage. She immediately asked him what he was doing in the garage and he yelled “I am looking for my friend.” Knowing that he was not her friend, she immediately pressed the garage door remote control she had in the vehicle she was driving – and then drove her vehicle up against the garage door to trap the suspect inside. She then calmly phone 9-1-1 and reported the burglary-in-progress as the suspect began to bang on the inside door pleading ” please let me out – I am on parole – I just got out of jail.- I can’t go back” He was immediately arrested and will be heading back to a confining 9 x 12 foot cell. While I do not recommend taking action – this was very quick thinking on the lady’s part which resulted in the suspect’s capture!

Flashback Fridays: Francis Boggs

A few weeks back, I wrote a post about movie pioneer William Selig. If there’s one thing that history has taught me it’s that behind every pioneer is some guy (or gal) that was an integral part of their success. That person often goes unrecognized… and then dies tragically. The invisible man to William Selig’s pioneer was Francis Boggs.

Boggs met Selig while working in theaters in Chicago during the nineteen-aughts. He began writing and directing films for the Selig Polyscope Company in 1907. One really cool thing that he was involved in was the Fairylogue and Radio-Plays: a presentation of L. Frank Baum’s Oz books using live actors, magic lantern slides and film!!  Around this time Boggs began to travel to different locations in the U.S. to shoot scenes for his films. He made the trip to California (his home state) a couple of times to shoot films including The Count of Monte Cristo and In the Sultan’s Power (one of the first dramatic films to be shot entirely in Los Angeles).

In the fall of 1909, Boggs set up a satellite office in a rented bungalow on Allesandro Street in Edendale (now Glendale Blvd in Echo Park). Soon after, Selig joined him out here and this location became the permanent home of the Selig Polyscope Company, the west coast’s first major motion picture studio.

On October 27, 1911, one of the studio’s janitors, Frank Minematsu, went postal and shot Boggs four times. Selig himself tried to grab the gun away from Minematsu and was shot in the arm. Boggs died instantly. He was one of the fathers of Los Angeles’ film industry and created almost 200 short films, but he is remembered mostly for his death. It was one of the first scandals in an industry that was just beginning to take shape.

Silver Lake Jubilee this Weekend

The Silver Lake Jubilee is a two-day music and art event featuring 35 music acts, multi-disciplinary art, local artists and crafters, food from local restaurateurs, interactive booths, and various cultural enclaves in the Silver Lake and surrounding communities (Spaceland, Origami Vinyl, buzzbands.la and El Echo Parqeuño are curating music for the event).

The event will have a very strong focus on the environment, including the implementation of “Zero Waste initiatives with the goal of 90% land fill diversion and sourcing power from alternative energy resources.” There will be several interactive “villages,” including a Children’s Village, Literary Village, Arts Village and Eco Village.

Mooi to Open Today – UPDATE

As we reported last week, Mooi is set to open today with its creative raw-vegan menu featuring: juices, dessert and gourmet coffee at the ice cream bar, as well as a limited menu of breakfast and lunch items.

The winner of the vegan ice cream contest put on by Quarry Girl came up with the flavor called Cracker Jack: salted caramel ice cream with peanut butter swirl. The new item should be on Mooi’s new menu.

I went to the pre-opening party on Monday to sample the menu, but the event was incredibly crowded and it was difficult to get in on the food tray action. Of the three items I managed to try after hanging out by the prep area, I enjoyed two. The raw “sushi” item was really not my favorite (the nori just tasted overwhelmingly like a vitamin supplement), while the sweet and spicy flavor of the jalapeno pepper with some sort of vegan cheese filling was delicious. I was looking forward to trying some of the well-reviewed desserts, but didn’t see any come out of the prep area. That said, I’m willing to give Mooi another shot after it opens to the public.

Mooi is located on the corner of Sunset and Logan.

Hours are: Breakfast and Lunch Monday-Saturday, 8:00 am to 3:00 pm; Dinner fare Wednesday-Saturday, 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm; and Brunch on Sunday, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Cuban Music Festival in Echo Park

The 16th Annual Cuban Music Festival is taking place on Sunday, May 23, from 12:00 noon – 7:00 pm at the Echo Park Lake.

Performers include: Rumbankete, The Echo Park Project, Susie Hansen Latin Band, and DJ Saoco.

The event is free! As usual in the park, there will be plenty of international food, crafts, and clothing on sale.
